Introduction to the accounting environment, analysis and interpretation of financial statements and other business information for the purpose of decision making.

This course enables the student to become proficient in how accountants capture, measure and evaluate business decision-making using the techniques of accrual accounting.

Assumed background

Year 12 or equivalent. No prior accounting knowledge is assumed.

Aims and outcomes

This course aims to equip students from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines with awareness and knowledge in relevant fields of accounting essential to decision making in business.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Identify and explain accounting terms and concepts that are relevant to business decision making.

LO2.

Record and interpret business transactions and financial statements.

LO3.

Apply relevant and appropriate accounting knowledge and techniques in business problem-solving.

LO4.

Make and justify effective business operating, financing and investing decisions informed by relevant accounting information.

LO5.

Demonstrate management and cost accounting techniques, including the use of budgets, to support business decisions.

Assessment Details:

  • Topic assessed: Topics 1-11.
  • Administration: Blackboard Test.
  • 6 check-in quizzes with the best 5 used for final result.
  • Question types: 10 multiple choice questions. 
  • Each quiz will be open for 20 minutes.
  • Only ONE attempt for each quiz.
  • Deferred or supplementary quiz is NOT available.
  • Students must ensure their access to a laptop or desktop computer as well as stable internet connection for the duration of this assessment. Do not use a mobile device for this assessment.

Task description

Assessment details:

  • This assessment is based on a case of a retailing business. 
  • Assignment materials will be released on Blackboard and discussed in the Assignment Workshop.
  • Inspera will open for data entry two weeks before the due date.
  • Topic assessed: Topics 1-6.
  • Question types: calculations, short answers and recording transactions.
  • Supplementary assessment is not available for this assignment.
  • Inspera cloud-based software is used to complete the ACCT1101 assignment. The individual assignment includes a non-invigilated digital assessment and students will access this using their own device. Further details, including an introduction to Inspera functionality, practice opportunities, and where to go for support, will be provided in the Blackboard site for this course.
  • An optional Excel file will be provided for students to complete some of the calculation questions before entering the data into Inspera for submission and marking.
