This course provides students with an introduction to the building blocks of management accounting in the areas of costing, planning and control. It provides students with the ability to analyse different cost behaviours across different organisation types, leading to undertaking cost-volume-profit analysis, job costing, the preparation of budgets, the preparation of budgeted financial statements and sensitivity analysis. Coverage of these management tools allows students to assess the performance evaluation of managers including the design of any managerial incentives to encourage appropriate behaviours of managers, and any ethical dilemmas managers may face.
Management and cost accounting information are used in planning, control, and decision-making. This course introduces:

- Performance measurement
- Strategy and sustainability balanced scorecards
- Ethics
Course requirements
Assumed background
Students must have previosuly undertaken Financial Reporting and Analysis ACCT1110 (or equivalent course) to be familiar with accounting (including journal entries, T-accounts, and closing entries) and financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement).

Additional timetable information
Two-hour Lectures plus Two-hour Tutorials
The two-hour lecture generally comprise lectures interspersed with Interactive Excel Activities.
- Students must bring a laptop computer (which can be borrowed from UQ if needed).
- PowerPoint slides for each lecture are on Blackboard and provide a framework for the material and highlight the areas of importance.
The two-hour tutorials start in the second teaching week.
- The format trails by-one-week, for example, Topic 1 in the Lecture in teaching week one is the topic covered in the Tutorial in teaching week two.
- Students must bring a laptop computer with Excel (which can be borrowed from UQ if needed).
Students must download from BlackBoard and print-off a copy of the In-Class Workbook.pdf. Bring it to each lecture and tutorial.

Aims and outcomes
The course aims to equip students with an understanding of management and cost accounting principles. The course has three parts:
Part one: differences between financial, management and cost accounting; cost behaviour and allocation principles
Part two: budgeting procedures - including a group assignment
Part three: variance analysis and control; performance measurement; strategy and sustainability balanced scorecards; ethics

Task description
You will work in a group to submit a Draft Budget with an Excel model and PowerPoint presentation.
- Groups must have 4 students (no more, no less) from the same tutorial class. Students must arrange themselves into groups. If you need help joining or forming a group please contact your tutor. There will be a GoogleSheet on BlackBoard for students to arrange themselves into groups.
- A formative feedback provides time for each group to submit their draft assignment once for feedback for actioning prior to the final submission date.
- A peer assessment task must also be completed for this group assignment - each student will complete a form in which they provide their perception of the relative contribution of each of their group members (whether equal or unequal).
- Groups will make in-class presentations during tutorials.
