This course extends on the student's knowledge of management accounting gained in ACCT1102. Initially the course will revise and extend cost accounting concepts: relevant to planning, controlling and decision-making activities within organisations. The initial focus is on the cost accounting systems that managers use in their decisions about resource allocation and performance evaluation; especially within the manufacturing environment. We will extend upon job costing systems by studying more refined costing systems including departmental allocations and activity-based costing as well as process-based costing. We will then explore relevant costs for decision making for various real-world scenarios. The final part of the course revisits budgets and expands on this fundamental planning tool with variance analysis for performance evaluation and control.
This course teaches a major field of accounting, which emphasises costing concepts, systems and techniques that provide information for use in the planning, controlling, and decision-making activities of an organisation. Each of these activities is directed towards the achievement of the organisation's goals and objectives. A significant emphasis in this course is placed on developing anᅠunderstanding of the different costing systems that can be used by managers in manufacturing and service organisations to cost output, aid in the preparation of plans, and help to facilitate control of operations and activities.

Assumed background
It is assumed that students are familiar with accounting for business activities and transactions, and the financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement).
Before attempting this course, students are advised that it is important to complete the appropriate prerequisite course(s), and to have the assumed prerequisite knowledge. No responsibility will be accepted by the UQ Business School, the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law or The University of Queensland for poor student performance occurring in courses where the appropriate prerequisite(s) and assumed background have not been met, for any reason whatsoever.

Task description
The In-Semester examination will be conducted on a Saturday after Lecture 4 and the related Tutorial
(tutorial 4) have been completed. Students will be advised of the date as soon as the University makes this
available.
The In-Semester exam will consist of a combination of multiple choice, short answer and practical/problem
solving questions that will assess your knowledge and application of material covered in Lectures and
Tutorials 1-4 inclusive.
Student ID must be produced at the exam. Results will be posted on the course Blackboard site.
Criteria & Marking:
MCQs will be computer marked. Short answer and practical/problem solving questions will be marked on
the basis of your working and final answer.

Task description
This exam is a closed book, invigilated exam as required by UQ and Professional Accounting organisations.
The exam is an on-campus, paper-based exam invigilated by UQ appointed invigilators.

- The final exam will cover Week 5 to Week 12 (i.e., Cost Behaviour and CVP Analysis through to and including Overhead Variances)
