This course introduces students to cost accounting concepts relevant to planning and controlling and decision making activities within organisations. Focusing on the accounting systems that managers use in their decisions about resource allocation and performance evaluation, especially within the manufacturing environment.

Management accounting information is broadly used in planning, control, and decision-making. The course has three parts:

  1. Cost behaviour and approaches.
  2. Relevant costing and capital expenditure analysis (in business cases).
  3. Overhead and activity-based costing, budgeting and variance analysis, and balanced scorecards for strategy and sustainability.

Course requirements

Assumed background

Students should have previously undertaken Financial Accounting for Business (ACCT2112 or equivalent course) and are therefore familiar with accounting for business activities and transactions (including journal entries and T-accounts), and the financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement). No responsibility will be accepted by The University of Queensland for poor student performance occurring in courses where the appropriate prerequisite(s) and assumed background have not been met, for any reason whatsoever.

Aims and outcomes

This course aims for students to understand cost behaviour, relevant costing, capital expenditures, cost allocation, cost management, budgetary control and environmental management accounting. The course also aims to equip students with group work skills and skills in concisely communicating management accounting information.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Recognise and explain the role of management accounting in the planning, control and decision making activities of organisations.

LO2.

Understand variable and fixed costs, and apply that knowledge to cost-volume-profit analysis.

LO3.

Understand and apply relevant costing techniques.

LO4.

Understand capital expenditure analysis and work in a group to apply that understanding to prepare and concisely communicate a 'real-world' business case.

LO5.

Understand and apply traditional and activity-based overhead costing methods, and explain the circumstances in which a particular method is appropriate.

LO6.

Understand budgeting systems, prepare budgets and flexible budget variance analyses and explain the rationale for using these, and their behavioural effects.

LO7.

Develop an awareness of strategy, balanced scorecards and sustainability management accounting.

Task description

  • You will work in a group of two to submit a Business Case using capital expenditure analysis methods.
  • It is very well known that skills in group work and the concise communication of analysis in a business-style are very important for graduates and managers.
  • Group members must be from the same Tutorial Class (no exceptions). Students must arrange themselves into groups. If you need help joining or forming a group please contact the Course Coordinator.
  • The formative feedback window is Mon-Thurs of Week 9, during which time each group can submit their assignment once for feedback for actioning prior to the submission date.
  • A peer assessment task must also be completed for this group assignment, the results of the peer assessment may impact your final result for this assessment.
  • Presentations will be held during Week 13 tutorial classes.
  • More information will be made available on Blackboard.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

10% Late Penalty applies to submitted material only. Late submissions are not accepted for in-class presentations. Failure to present at the scheduled time will result in a mark of zero for the presentation portion of this assessment.
