Introduction to the form, function and physiology of the major microbial groups, particularly as they relate to plant and animal health and production; introduction to the basic theory and applications of gene technology.

Welcome to AGRC2013 - Agricultural Microbiology and Gene Technology. The science of microbiology deals with microscopic living organisms such as fungi, protozoa, bacteria, archaea and viruses. Other agents like prions and viroids are also dealt with, due to their impact on animal and human health. Microbiology is one of the most fascinating and challenging biological sciences, attractingﾠscientists and researchers worldwide. With new and emerging technologies, the field of microbiology is rapidly expanding. This course will provide the underpinning basics, and use examples from across all aspects of agriculture to demonstrate the crucial role microbiology plays in everyday life.ﾠ
This course has mandatory immunisation requirements due to an increased risk of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) for students working with animals or in agricultural environments. Students will be asked to provide evidence of vaccination against tetanus via my.UQ My Requests as a condition of enrolment in this course. Refer to UQ Student Immunisation Requirements for more information.

Aims and outcomes
To provide students with knowledge and skills associated with the fundamental concepts of microbiology. Interaction between the different classes of microbes and plants, animals, and their environment will be described in relation to animal health, plant health, and the quality of agricultural products.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Explain how microorganisms may be detected within various environments, including how they may be cultivated within the laboratory setting, and molecular methods of detection.

Task description
You are to create and present a scientific style poster describing a microbial disease of your choice, but it must be related to agriculture (i.e. of relevance to plants, animals or food). DO NOT use one of the case study examples from module 5 (These include Johne's disease, Prions (mad cow) and Chlamydia in Koalas).

Abstract - Summary (2 marks)
Introduction - What is the disease, causative agent? Sympotms? Its impact on the industry? (3 marks)

COURSE GRADING RULES AND ASSESSMENT HURDLES
Students must obtain a pass mark in the end-of-semester exam in order to pass the course.
If a student obtains an overall percentage greater than the cut-offs set to achieve a 4 or higher for the course based on the cumulative mark of all assessments, and the student does NOT score a result greater than 50% in the final exam, they are unable to achieve a grade higher than a 3 (failing grade) for the course.
You must address any additional assessment requirements identified in this course instance.
PRACTICAL CLASSES
You must complete and adhere to the OHS paperwork to attend practical classes.
For In Person students, there are Practical Classes scheduled everyﾠweek. The practicals run for approximately 2-3 hours and areﾠlaboratory-based activities. To obtain a grade for the practical classes studentsﾠmust attendﾠand complete the associated exercises.ﾠIf you do not attend a practical class, your answers for that class will not be marked/graded.
In Person students who cannot attend an in-person prac for legitimate reasons should contact the course coordinator as soon as they know they will not be able to attend, even if on the same day/morning of a scheduled prac activity.ﾠAlternative dates CANNOT be arranged (i.e. attending another prac group/scheduled class) and you will be referred to AGFSﾠadmin to apply for an extension and potentially be given the option of doing the alternative ‘take home prac’.

Student immunisation requirements
The University policy Vaccination and Immunisation (https://ppl.app.uq.edu.au/content/2.60.08-vaccinations-and-immunisation) provides information about immunisation and screening requirements related to programs and courses. Failure to comply with student immunisation requirements can lead to an increased risk of serious illness occurring. Therefore, non-compliance will result in the relevant course/s being dropped from your enrolment under Section 3.2 of the Enrolment policy (https://ppl.app.uq.edu.au/content/3.40.11-enrolment).
