This course enables students to acquire practical skills and experience in an authentic work environment. Through the completion of 120-160 hours of placement in a workplace related to the area of study, students will gain an understanding of the real world application of their learning. They will also learn about the nature of careers in their chosen field, identify possible career pathways, and reflect on their professional skills and personal development.
Information about enrolling in a placement course, including registering your interest and application deadlines, can be found here: science.uq.edu.au/placements
This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply the theory and skills learnt on Campus to real world situations through work integrated learning. It also enables students to identify knowledge gaps and work on gaining new skills to enhance employment opportunities after graduation. Relationship building/networking and gaining insights into the nature of the industry are also valuable outcomes of the course.
Students are responsible for securing their own suitable work placement related to their studies, subject to Faculty of Science approval.
Students interested in taking this course should first read and follow the steps under How to enrol in a WIL placement course here: https://science.uq.edu.au/placementsᅠ
It is not possible to apply for credit for this course using past work in industry;ᅠi.e. the placement must be a new placement for the semester/teaching period enrolled and not be the student's current workplace. The industry placement is required to take place in a singleᅠplacement organisationᅠforᅠa minimum of 120 hours (recommended maximum 160 hours). Students must understand that they will participate in theᅠindustry placement with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility.
The assessment for this course is based on reflective practice, which is critical for developing personal and professional understanding in any industry. While this course does not provide explicitᅠteaching material to teach deep reflection, the course promotes students' self-understanding through participating inᅠan authentic workplace, interacting with industry placement supervisors, and attending course workshops. Summer semester is a short semester and there are only 8 teaching weeks that you are able to do your placement work activities. The final assessment must be submitted by the due date in January. The placement must start and finish within the summer semester teaching period.
Students are encouraged to access resources and attend workshops offered by the Student Employability Centre to assist with identifying opportunities and preparing application documents.
All enquiries for this course should be addressed to the Faculty of Science (enquire@science.uq.edu.au).
