This course will give students the necessary understanding on the evolution of the structure of animals and provide a strong base on which to build future knowledge. An understanding of animal anatomy is essential for the understanding of systems within the body.
Evidence of immunity to Q fever is mandatory for this course. Refer to UQ Student Immunisation Requirements for more information.
This course is designed for first year students as an introduction to animal anatomy.ᅠ It will encourage students to explore the origins, diversity, evolution and structure or animals. It will give you the necessary background on which to build your future knowledge base for ANIM2057 (Applied Animal Physiology).
This course has mandatory immunisation requirements due to an increased risk of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) for students working with animals or in agricultural environments. Students will be asked to provide evidence of immunity to Q fever via my.UQ My Requests as a condition of enrolment in this course. Refer to UQ Student Immunisation Requirements for more information.
It is assumed that you have completed AGRC1021.
You can't enrol in this course if you've already completed the following:
AGRC1020; ANIM2051
Any student that has completed BIOL1020, BIOL1030 or BIOL1040 will need permission from the Faculty of Science to enrol into ANIM1020. Please contact the Faculty of Science. Restricted to students who meet mandatory immunisation requirements.
To make an appointment, please email e.narayan@uq.edu.au.
The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.
This course expects 10 committed student hours a week. This includes:
If you do not come to the Lectures and associated tutorials then you need to make sure you spend time (in conjunction with any additional Resource Material you will find on the Blackboard site)ᅠwatching the Zoom Video and reading the lecture material which will be posted online on the Blackboard site.ᅠ
Lectures and Tutorials will be run in-person and recorded.
Practicals must be attended in-person and will be conducted using the prescribed practical manualᅠand assessmentᅠinformation provided via Bb.
The aim of this course is to provide you with an introduction to anatomy and the anatomical diversity of animals.
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Use and summarise anatomical terms and features applied to different animal groups
LO2.
Compare and contrast organ systems in different animal groups
LO3.
Be competent in the use of modern anatomical technologies
LO4.
Apply the basic principles of anatomy in a written and practical format

Course Grading Rules and Assessment Hurdles
You must address any additional assessment requirements identified in this ECP
In order to obtain a passing grade for this course, students must achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% for all assessment items AND submitᅠthe Woolly Mammoth assignment.
The practical exercise is a major part of this course and provides a hands-on understanding of the theoretical knowledge you will gain through the lectures. Demonstration of the laboratory techniques is compulsory. Learning objectiveᅠ3ᅠcannot be achieved without participating in theᅠpracticals. Hence, Students must attend at least 80% of the practicals (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) to pass this course.
Supplementary assessment is available for this course.
Please note the following when writing assignments
You must not re-use past work from previous assessments in your assignments.
Presentation of work
Your Laboratory prac work should be presented in a clear and legible way.ᅠ
Difficulties with assessing student work
The course coordinator or a colleague may contact you if there are any difficulties with assessing your work.
Practical non-attendanceᅠ
Acceptable evidence for practical non-attendance is similar to the evidence required for aᅠdeferred examination. The Practical sessions are timetabled activities, and if students miss a practical and request exemption/access to online material as relevant, they must provide documentation that shows they were unable to attend the practical on the relevant day. Documentation for ongoing conditions, such as Student Access Plans, are not acceptable evidence for missed Practical sessions.
TurnItInᅠ
Assignments that are required to be submitted through TurnItIn, must only be uploaded to the assessment specific Turnitin link on the relevant course Blackboard site.ᅠ If you submit any version of your assessment item to any alternative Turnitin link, this is considered cheating and you will be held liable for this action.ᅠ
Release of marks
Unless specifically indicated by the course coordinator,ᅠevery attempt will be madeᅠto haveᅠthe results for progressive assessment available within 3 weeks of submission. For items of assessment submitted in the last 2 weeks of the semester, the results will not be available until grades release day.ᅠResults and feedback availability will be advised to you by email or announced via the course Blackboard site.
Re-mark Applications – refer to the University's Re-mark Policy to check your eligibility
Before applying for a remark, students should consider the following:
Remark applications will not be considered without first having contacted your course Co-ordinator.ᅠ
Deferred and Supplementary assessment (including Deferred In-Semester Examinations)
Deferred and Supplementary information can be located on the my.UQ website
