This course will give students the necessary understanding on the evolution of the structure of animals and provide a strong base on which to build future knowledge. An understanding of animal anatomy is essential for the understanding of systems within the body.

Evidence of immunity to Q fever is mandatory for this course. Refer to UQ Student Immunisation Requirements for more information.

This course is designed for first year students as an introduction to animal anatomy.ᅠ It will encourage students to explore the origins, diversity, evolution and structure or animals. It will give you the necessary background on which to build your future knowledge base for ANIM2057 (Applied Animal Physiology).

This course has mandatory immunisation requirements due to an increased risk of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) for students working with animals or in agricultural environments. Students will be asked to provide evidence of immunity to Q fever via my.UQ My Requests as a condition of enrolment in this course. Refer to UQ Student Immunisation Requirements for more information.

Course requirements

This practical is related to Chapter 1 of the Laboratory Manual.

In this practical, you will be assigned a series of questions that you will work through during the practical session and will submit your answers using the template provided to the assessment link created in the course blackboard site.

Your attendance at the practical will be recorded. If you cannot attend a practical session, you will need to apply for an extension providing the appropriate evidence. If you have the extension approval, you will be provided access to online resources to complete the assessment task.

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submission guidelines

You must submit your Report via the assessment link created in the course blackboard site by the due date and time. Legal Declaration: By submitting your work, you formally declare that (1) it is your own original work, and no part of the work has been copied from any other source or person except where due acknowledgement is made; (2) no part of the work has been previously submitted for assessment in this or any other institution; and (3) you have read the UQ Academic Integrity and Plagiarism Policy (http://ppl.app.uq.edu.au/content/3.60.04-student-integrity-and-misconduct) and understand its implications.

Deferral or extension

Task description

In week one

  • you will complete the woolly mammoth quiz. This quiz has no marks attached to it. You will note the variable that is given to you in the question itself and you will use these variables throughout the semester to design an animal based on your growing knowledge of anatomy. For example, the question may refer to your animal as being either nocturnal or diurnal - this is then one of your variables as indicated by the quiz question you receive.

Following weeks

  • each week during the tutorial you will receive a new task or question which you will use as a guideline to construct your animal.
  • Activities in tutorials will be used to help guide your choices (Note it is expected that students will attend tutorials and an attendance list will be kept)

At the end of week 13

  • you will submit the portfolio for grading

This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Additional course grading information

Course Grading Rules and Assessment Hurdles

You must address any additional assessment requirements identified in this ECP

In order to obtain a passing grade for this course, students must achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% for all assessment items AND submitᅠthe Woolly Mammoth assignment.

The practical exercise is a major part of this course and provides a hands-on understanding of the theoretical knowledge you will gain through the lectures. Demonstration of the laboratory techniques is compulsory. Learning objectiveᅠ3ᅠcannot be achieved without participating in theᅠpracticals. Hence, Students must attend at least 80% of the practicals (2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) to pass this course.

Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessment is available for this course.

Additional assessment information

Please note the following when writing assignments

You must not re-use past work from previous assessments in your assignments.

Presentation of work

Your Laboratory prac work should be presented in a clear and legible way.ᅠ

Difficulties with assessing student work

The course coordinator or a colleague may contact you if there are any difficulties with assessing your work.

Practical non-attendance

Acceptable evidence for practical non-attendance is similar to the evidence required for aᅠdeferred examination. The Practical sessions are timetabled activities, and if students miss a practical and request exemption/access to online material as relevant, they must provide documentation that shows they were unable to attend the practical on the relevant day. Documentation for ongoing conditions, such as Student Access Plans, are not acceptable evidence for missed Practical sessions.

TurnItInᅠ

Assignments that are required to be submitted through TurnItIn, must only be uploaded to the assessment specific Turnitin link on the relevant course Blackboard site.ᅠ If you submit any version of your assessment item to any alternative Turnitin link, this is considered cheating and you will be held liable for this action.ᅠ

Release of marks

Unless specifically indicated by the course coordinator,ᅠevery attempt will be madeᅠto haveᅠthe results for progressive assessment available within 3 weeks of submission. For items of assessment submitted in the last 2 weeks of the semester, the results will not be available until grades release day.ᅠResults and feedback availability will be advised to you by email or announced via the course Blackboard site.

Re-mark Applications – refer to the University's Re-mark Policy to check your eligibility

Before applying for a remark, students should consider the following:

  • You have consulted the course coordinator for feedback
  • Your academic grounds for remark have been discussed and are valid
  • Wanting a higher grade is not grounds for a remark. A remark can decrease your grade.

Remark applications will not be considered without first having contacted your course Co-ordinator.ᅠ
