Advanced concepts and practices used in the sustainable management of cattle, sheep and goat enterprises in Australia.
Evidence of immunity to Q fever is mandatory for the In Person offering of course. Refer to UQ Student Immunisation Requirements for more information.
This course will cover advanced concepts in the management and husbandryᅠof cattle (both dairy and beef), sheep and goats.ᅠWe will also cover aspects of economic and environmental sustainability as relevant to the target species.ᅠMuch of what we discuss will be aimed at best practice - not necessarily the only practice suitable for various production systems. Students will cover topics such as parasites andᅠpasture management, as well asᅠgeneral husbandry and management practices with opportunities for hands-on involvement.ᅠ
This course will encourage interaction among students and teaching staff, including problem based learning and self directed lecture modulesᅠinterwoven with practical animal unit involvement. We expect that you will read widely and ask questions.
You are required to attend and complete all practical components to pass this course.
PLEASE NOTE:
This course has mandatory immunisation requirements due to an increased risk of Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) for students working with animals or in agricultural environments. Students will be asked to provide evidence of immunity to Q fever via my.UQ My Requests as a condition of enrolment in this course. Refer to UQ Student Immunisation Requirements for more information.
Some practical components are scheduled out of normal class hours and completion of these activities is compulsory to pass the course.ᅠ
You will be required to complete all inductions and wear appropriate clothing and enclosed footwear for all practical activities involving animals.ᅠ

Additional course grading information
COURSE GRADING RULES AND ASSESSMENT HURDLES
Students must score 50% or greater in the end-of-semester exam in order to pass the course.
If a student obtains an overall percentage greater than the cut-offs set to achieve a 4 or higher for the course based on the cumulative mark of all assessments, and the student does NOT score a result greater than 50% in the final exam, they are unable to achieve a grade higher than a 3 (failing grade) for the course.
You must address any additional assessment requirements identified in this eCP.
PRACTICAL CLASSES
You must complete and adhere to the OHS paperwork to attend practical classes.
For In Person students, there are Practical Classes scheduled every 2-3 weeks. The practicals run for approximately 2 hours and are field-based activities. To obtain a grade for the practical classes studentsᅠmust attendᅠand complete the associated exercises.ᅠIf you do not attend a practical class, or do not provide evidence of your attendance (i.e. signing attendance sheet), your report will not be marked/graded.
In Person students who cannot attend an in-person prac for legitimate reasons should contact the course coordinator and contactᅠAGFSᅠadmin (agriculture@enquire.uq.edu.au) to apply for an extension and potentially be given the option of doing the alternative ‘take home prac’.ᅠ
Supplementary assessment
Supplementary assessment is available for this course.
Additional assessment information
Please note the following when writing assignments
You must not re-use past work from previous assessments in your assignments.
Turnitin
Assignmentsᅠthat are required to be submitted throughᅠTurnItIn, mustᅠonlyᅠbe uploaded to the assessment specific Turnitin link on the relevant course Blackboard site. If you submit any version of your assessment item to any alternative Turnitin link, this is considered cheating and you will be held liable for this action.ᅠ
Release of marks
Unless specifically indicated by the lecturer involved, every attempt will be made to have the results for progressive assessment tasks available within 3 weeks of submission. For items of assessment submitted in the last 2 weeks of the semester, the results will be available before the day of your end of semester examination in the course, unless otherwise indicated by the Course Coordinator. Results and feedback availability will be advised to you by email or announced via the course Blackboard site.
Re-mark Applications – refer to theᅠUniversity's Re-mark Policyᅠto check your eligibility
- Before applying for a remark, students should consider the following:
- You have consulted the course coordinator for feedback
- Your academic grounds for remark have been discussed and are valid
- Wanting a higher grade is not grounds for a remark. A remark can decrease your grade.
- Remark applicationsᅠwill notᅠbe considered without first having contacted your course Co-ordinator.ᅠ
Deferred and Supplementary assessment (including Deferred In-Semester Examinations)
Deferred and Supplementary information can be located on theᅠmy.UQᅠwebsite
