Students will look at a range of modern and modernist visual artefacts, from paintings and sculpture to the photograph, the illustrated magazine, the silent movie, the avant-garde journal and the animated film.
ARTT1105 will explore what we mean by modernity and its relationship to technology and mass culture. Itᅠ will examine the history of the avant-gardes from the mid-nineteenth century to the 1960s ᅠby locating artistic production in the context of new form of mechanical image production, the emergence of mass culture, the history of colonialism and the rise of totalitarianism in theᅠ twentieth century. We will ᅠinvestigate ᅠthe ways in which artists drew on popular culture and non-Western art to critique modernity and problematise conventional approaches to artistic production, gender norms,ᅠand subjective experience. Impressionism, Cubism, Constructivism, Futurism, Surrealism, Dada, Realism, and Abstract Expressionism will be some of the movements and trends discussed in the course. ᅠStudents will look atᅠ a range of modern and modernist visual artefacts, including sculpture, painting, photography, photomontage and architecture.

Task description
Students will be required to write a formal academic essay responding to one essay question. They will be given a number of questions to choose from. These questions are *all* based on the required course readings and the lectures from Week 1 to Week 13. Please note that this essay is different from a research essay. Students will NOT need to consult texts beyond the ones listed in the course reading list.
While official policy states that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Translation (MT) may be used in completing this assessment task (see below), all students in this course are strongly discouraged from using AI technology. This assessment is designed to develop and test your own thinking and writing skills, essential skills in all arts professions. Outsourcing these essential skills to AI technology means that you will not be able to develop these skills over the course of your degree.
Word count is 1800 words (+/- 10%).
The essay must include reference to the set readings, formatted correctly in Chicago Manual of Style (Notes and Bibliography Style). Please check the following link for more info about referencing rules: https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide/citation-guide-1.html
Footnotes are NOT included in the word count.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Translation (MT) are emerging tools that may support students in completing this assessment task. Students may appropriately use AI and/or MT in completing this assessment task. Students must clearly reference any use of AI or MT in each instance.
A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
