A broad-based assessment of Australian art from the colonial period to the 1970s. Particular attention is paid to landscape painting, national themes, and the development of Australian Modernism.
This is an introductory survey course on Australian art from the time of colonisation onwards. We will look at many of the main figures and movements that make up the history of art in Australia. But, more than this, we will address questions raised in the writing of and thinking about this art history. Some of the issues discussed in this course are: whether there is any such thing as an identifiable Australian art and culture; the impact of Modernism on Australian art; the politics of writing nation-based histories of art; and the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenousᅠart.
