A broad-based assessment of Australian art from the colonial period to the 1970s. Particular attention is paid to landscape painting, national themes, and the development of Australian Modernism.
This is an introductory survey course on Australian art from the time of colonisation onwards. We will look at many of the main figures and movements that make up the history of art in Australia. But, more than this, we will address questions raised in the writing of and thinking about this art history. Some of the issues discussed in this course are: whether there is any such thing as an identifiable Australian art and culture; the impact of Modernism on Australian art; the politics of writing nation-based histories of art; and the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenousﾠart.

Aims and outcomes
This course aims:
- to familiarise students with the main historical figures and movements in Australian art
- to introduce a number of the key debates and issues shaping the writing of Australian art
- to consider the limits and possibilities that might frame a history of Australian art
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Think and write well about Australian art and its attendant issues on the basis of a familiarity with works of art seen both in class and on class visits to art galleries and institutions.
LO2.
Exhibit a thorough knowledge of the historical development of art in Australia, and respond to and write about it critically.

Task description
10 worksheets with short questions on aspects of the lecture and readings will be distributed in tutorials across the semester. The worksheets with be completed individually towards the end of the tutorial and handed in directly to the tutor at the end of class. Each worksheet is worth 2% of final grade. Worksheets are graded as pass/fail.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
Submit directly to the tutor at the end of your tutorial.
Deferral or extension
You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.
Please note: because this is an in-class assessment item, you are NOT able to apply for an extension via the Unitask portal. Please notify your tutor directly if you are unable to attend class for medical reasons and require an extension. If eligible for an extension, the missed worksheet can be completed online.

Task description
Students will choose one work of Australian art currently on display at the Queensland Art Gallery and write an 800 word visual analysis of the work that addresses (i) style and formal characteristics (ii) content and subject matter and (iii) the work's historical significance and relevance. Some background research on the artist and associated art movements will be required to complete this exercise. An image of the work and a bibliography of all reference sources must be attached. Footnotes to reference material should be formatted using Chicago Manual of Style. Footnotes and bibliography are not included in the word count.

Task description
Research and write an essay of 2500 words on topics to be distributed in class. Wordlength does not include footnotes and bibliography. This assignment requires independent research. In addition to the consultation of the set readings and the recommended reading lists, students need to independently source texts so as to demonstrate original research. A separate bibliography must be attached, preferably in Chicago style.

Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
