This course offers students the opportunity to undertake an internship with a public art institution either within Australia or internationally, or complete a major independent research project. For those interested in internships, students must make a formal application to the public institutions themselves and have approval prior to the commencement of the course. The course convener also must approve the suitability of the internship prior to commencing the course.
Individual research topics are available to advanced students with good records, and typically results in a research essay of approx. 5,000 words. Research Topics are decided in consultation with a staff member whose expertise aligns with your independent research area. Students are encouraged to focus on institutional art archives and art collections and require a GPA of 5.0 or above to undertake this course.

The independent research option of this courseᅠis designed for students who are considering doing Honours in art history andᅠwho have the opportunity to complete a focused research projectᅠin the field of art history.ᅠResearch projects can involve examination of scholarly archives in public institutions or other approvedᅠart institutions. Students must secure approval from a suitable supervisor prior to enrolment.
The internship option is designed to help students gain visual arts industry experience and to gain understanding of the professionalᅠapplications of art history study. Students must obtain a place in a formal internship program at a public art institution prior to enrolment. Once they have secured this internship they then seek approval from an art history lecturer who will supervise the academic requirements of the course.ᅠ

You'll need to complete the following courses before enrolling in this one:
8 units of courses in the Art History Major with a GPA of 5.0 across those courses. Direct enrolment is not possible and students must first contact the course convenor.

Aims and outcomes
The aim of this course is to provide advanced art history students with an opportunity to conduct focused study in art historyᅠby way ofᅠarchival research, or through a formal internship experience.ᅠ
The requirements for students to work with either a public art archive or to conduct an internship at a public art museum are designed to enhance relations between the study of art history and the visual arts industry.ᅠ
Students who complete the course will gain experience in working off-campus within the visual arts industry and develop scholarly skills in the research and presentation of art.

Task description
The Project Plan should be completed in conjunction with their Industry Supervisor and include:
- An overview of the industry context of the internship and the particular tasks of the unit where the internship takes place
- A description of the project or professional services that the student will work on during the internship
- An outline of the aims and objectives of the internship
- An indication of expected outcomes of the internship - for the industry supervisor and for the student
- An indication of the professional skills that the student will develop during the internship
- An indication of any perceived problems or challenges with the development of the internship

Task description
Select five key research items that you have uncovered in your independent research and write a short, 200 word annotation for each that explains its significance and relevance to your project topic. References should be formatted correctly using Chicago Manual of Style. In addition to the five annotated items, please attach a working bibliography also formatted in Chicago of any additional texts that you have located around your topic (the attached bibliography is not included in word count). You must also include 250 words on your proposed essay plan.

Communication Expectations
