Revitalising Indigenous languages involves diverse processes, practices, and skills, that are underpinned by Indigenous ways of being, knowing and doing.
In this course, students build critical knowledge and skills in four key topics in Indigenous Language Revitalisation; community and revitalisation networks, adult language learning, archival research and language description.

Aims and outcomes
This course provides students with practical and culturally-sustaining critical skills in key topics in Indigenous language revitalisation.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Discuss and reflect on knowledge systems, methodologies, and technologies pertinent to Indigenous language revitalisation and apply these theories in diverse contexts to reclaim Languages.
LO2.
Demonstrate advanced skills in engaging with Communities, Elders, knowledge holders, and other language practitioners, enhancing networks and alliances that support language revitalisation.
LO3.
Identify and evaluate culturally affirming and self-directed language learning strategies.
LO4.
Articulate key theoretical approaches and concepts in linguistic description.
LO5.
Locate, interrogate and appraise language and cultural material in archives and collections and contrast past and present practices and outcomes for language documentation and revitalisation.

Task description
In this assessment, you will prepare and deliver a 5-10 minute presentation that includes:
- positioning your Language context in Local, national and international Language Revitalisation networks
- learnings from other language revitalisation practitioners
- examples, facts, statistics, data or other evidence to support your presentation
- visuals that support your oral presentation (e.g. poster, PowerPoint, handouts)
- engaging the audience during the presentation
- 5 minutes discussion, answering audience questions following the presentation
- the poster/handout must be submitted via Blackboard on the day of the presentation

Task description
Create an inventory of materials in your language using a template Excel Spreadsheet provided by your Lecturer. The inventory will list 5 -10 resources and include details of the materials, including notes on local protocols for access and use of materials.
For each item in your catalogue, include key details in at least the following fields:
- title
- format
- location/collection
- catalogue ID (if applicable)
- date produced or published
- speaker/s
- content type
- collector
In addition, record your interaction with each item, evaluate its usefulness and give your reasons by recording:
- a record of your access (i.e. have you read or listened to the item, have you requested access, have you found about how to access this record)
- a star rating on a scale of 1-5 (where 5 indicates the best kind of resource)
- comments regarding the strengths of the resource
- comments regarding the drawbacks of the resource
Word limit for your evaluation of each resource is 70-150 words.

Task description
Keep a written journal over three weeks following the intensive workshop to document and reflect on your own language learning journey.
Include descriptions of:
- your language learning goals
- language materials you have accessed
- one aspect of your language, using a combination of plain language and linguistic terminology
- language learning strategies you have tried
Reflect on your above descriptions to include:
- new learnings about your language
- reflections on your engagement with people or resources in your network
- helpful and unhelpful strategies or ideas
- ideas for future language learning pathways
- links between theory or readings and real-life situations
Word limit for your journal is 1000-1500 words.
Submit your journal via Blackboard by due date, Friday of Week 12.
