The primary aim of this course is to examine how biological processes are studied at a molecular level. The emphasis is on the experimental approaches that are used to study proteins and nucleic acids: their identification, structural characterisation, and functional analysis (including bioinformatics).
Case studies of groundbreaking, modern experiments will be used to illustrate how different biological problems have been dissected at the molecular level.
Students who complete this course successfully will gain the ability to research and critique the scientific literature and to present their findings.
Students who complete this course will also have a working understanding of potential experimental approaches that they can employ when they begin work in the professional research laboratories later in their Masters program.ᅠ
This course provides a foundation for an understanding of biochemical methods of experimental protein analysis. Your course coordinator, Professor Ben Schulz is a Teaching and Research academic with a PhD and postdoctoral studies background in biochemistry, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and biotechnology.
There are four core modules in BIOC7040: bioinformatics for proteins and nucleic acids; protein expression and purification; protein characterisation; and protein structural biology. Specialist academics will deliver lectures in each of these modules to provide insights into modern experimental methods for exploring protein function, structure, and biology.ᅠ
Students will complete two literature review assignments during semester, focussing on Modules 1 & 2 and on Modules 3 & 4. Each topic will be accompanied by several workshop sessions in which students work on an assignment with the guidance of the course coordinator and other expert scientists. Class attendance is strongly recommended for all students, because this is the time that teaching staff will dedicate to answering questions and helping students prepare their assignments. Students may send questions to the course coordinator in advance of the sessions so the teaching staff can prepare specialised pieces of explanatory material for the class.
In the second part of the semester, students will integrate the knowledge they have gained on the use of modern techniques to understand protein function, structure, and biology, and use these to write a Research Proposal, including an introduction, hypothesis, aims, methods, and expected outcomes. This research proposal will provide the opportunity for students to design realistic experiments, similar to those they will undertake in the later stages of their Masters program.

Assumed background
We assume a complete knowledge of senior high school biology (completed within the last five years). Those with minimal biology training will find the course very challenging. A complete high school chemistry background would be very helpful.

Aims and outcomes
• The primary aim of this course is to examine how biological processes are studied at a molecular level, particularly with regard to nucleic acids and proteins. The emphasis is on proteins in important biological roles: their identification, structural characterization, and functional analysis (including bioinformatics), and the concept of conservation of protein fold and function over evolutionary time.
• The course complements BIOC7001.
• Students who complete this course successfully will gain the ability to research the scientific literature, to provide constructive and critical feedback on descriptions of protein research, and to present their findings.

Task description
Students will prepare a research proposal based on expression, purification, and characterisation of a protein of interest. The research proposal will take the form of a mock grant application. Specific details and formatting requirements will be provided on the course Blackboard site. The proposal should include a summary paragraph, literature review, research hypothesis, clearly stated aims, experimental approach, expected outcomes, anticipated future research directions and a list of references.

Assessment Hurdles
In order to pass this course, you must meet ALL of the following requirements (if you do not meet these requirements, the maximum grade you will receive will be a 3):
1. You must obtain an overall mark of 50% or more; and
2. You must obtain an overall mark of 40% or more in the end of semester exam; and
3. You must obtain a minimum weighted average mark of 40% across all other non-examination course assessment items and learning tasks; and
4. Complete and submit ALL assessment items and learning tasks.
The maximum grade you will receive will be a 2 if you:
1. Obtain an overall mark of 30% or less on the end of semester exam; and/or
2. Obtain a weighted average mark of 30% or less on theᅠnon-examination course assessment items and learning tasks.

A note for repeating students in this course
Any student who enrols in a course must not be given exemption or partial credit from their previous attempt(s) for any individual piece of assessment. Instead, the student must successfully complete all of the learning activities and assessment items within the study period of enrolment (PPL Assessment - Procedures Section: Assessment integrity).
If the same assessment item is set from one year to the next, repeating students are allowed to submit the same work they submitted in previous attempts at the course. Where possible SCMB recommends that you use the feedback you received in your last attempt to improve parts of the item where you lost marks. Resubmission of an altered or unaltered assessment item by a repeating student (where the same assessment has been set) will not be considered as self-plagiarism.

Suitable examples include the latest editions of Lehninger's Principles of Biochemistry by Nelson and Cox; Biochemistry by Stryer; Biochemistry by Voet or a similar comprehensive text.
