The course covers the fundamental concepts that allow complex organisms to function, with some focus on the human body & other higher organisms. Key concepts include basic cellular transport & signalling mechanisms, principles of biochemistry, neuronal structure & function, motor mechanisms & locomotion, circulation & gas exchange, and the endocrine system. Of key importance is the integration of concepts as they apply to the structure and function of different regions of the entire organism.
BIOM1051 ('Introductory Cellular Physiology') is an integratedᅠbiology course offered by the School of Biomedical Sciences and theᅠSchool of Chemistry & Molecular Biosciences. It presents a comprehensive overview of how structure and function are integrated at all levels from the cell to the organism.
The course contact hours include three lectures and a workshop most weeks and and four 3hour practical laboratory sessions during the semester. NOTE that practicals do not necessarily occur on alternating weeks and you should carefully check the dates for your scheduled practicals in your timetable. In Week 3, online tutorial classes will commence and run for the rest of the semester. There will be recordings for most activities (not practicals) provided that the technology functions (as it usually does), but we strongly recommend that you join us for ALL activities live and that you use theᅠrecordings only to help in your review of the material.
BIOM1051 is a 2 unit course, so, in addition to formal class contact, students are expected to study in groups and individually, progressively throughout the semester for this course. It will be necessary to spend a total of approximately 10-12 hours each week engaged in activities related to BIOM1051 throughout the semester (from Week 1). You must plan your timetable to enable you to attend all of your course activities as you will find the material very challenging otherwise.
Students should note that this course utilises animalᅠspecimens during the practical classes. Potential students who, for medical, personal, religious or other reasons, are unable to fully participate in these practical classes should discuss their situation with one of the Course Coordinators prior to enrolment.
Course requirements
Assumed background
Although there are no compulsory prerequisite courses for Cells to Organisms, it will be assumed that students have some basic knowledge in general biology and chemistry. Scheduled Readings will be available at least 1 week before each module to help you toᅠensure that you are adequately prepared for the biology in the coming module, as well as providing the relevant textbook readings for the module. It is suggested that students familiarise themselves with Unit One "The Chemistry of Life" in the Campbell Biology textbook before beginningᅠthe course if you have not completed Senior Chemistry or for some revision if you haven't reviewed those topics for some time.
Incompatible
You can't enrol in this course if you've already completed the following:
BIOL1040, BIOM1050
Restrictions
Restricted to students enrolled in the BPharm (Hons), BDentSc (Hons), BOccHlthSafetySc (Hons) programs only.
Course staff
Course coordinator
Lecturer
Timetable
The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.
Additional timetable information
It is essential that you check your personal timetable for scheduling of lectures,ᅠworkshops, practicals, and tutorial sessions. Your personal timetable will have the details including the venues for all of your face-to-face classes in BIOM1051. Tutorials will be conducted online.
Note: Please make sure to attend the correct practicals for your group. If you miss a practical for a valid reason, such as illness, then you will need to liaise with your group members promptly, so that you can submit your practical assessment by the due date and time. If you miss a practical for any reason, then you must still submit the relevant practical assessment (report) by the due date, unless you have an approved extension based on a medical certificate or other evidence as appropriate.
Aims and outcomes
BIOM1051 is structured around 6 key organising principles that map to unifying themes in the "Campbell Biology" textbook and to the learning objectives of BIOM1051. Students undertaking BIOM1051 should understand and appreciate the following 6 key organising principles:
- That structure and function are interrelated at all levels. Each level of organisation in the living world has its own unique aspects and there is continual interaction of structure and function between these levels.ᅠ
- That life can be described, explained and explored at different levels of hierarchical organisation.
- That cells and groups of cells / organism are capable of short-term and long-term adaptive changes involving feedback loops.ᅠ
- That organisms are open systems that exchange materials and energy with their surroundings and in doing so perform work.ᅠ
- That the process of bioscience includes observation-based discovery and the reproducible testing of explanations through hypothesis-driven enquiry.ᅠ
- That bioscience is multidisciplinary and new technologies are frequent outcomes. An understanding of the importance of science and technology in everyday life is critical to the broader society.

Task description
Update: Note that this prac moved from Week 3 to Week 9 of the semester due to the cyclone and consequent disruptions to timetable. The Assessment dates have been altered to suit the changes. The sequential numbering of pracs has not been changed making Biochemistry still "Prac 1", Osmosis Prac 2 and so on.
The "PRACTICAL RESOURCES" folder in the course Blackboard site contains a suite of resources to help you complete practicals and their associated assessment tasks. Before attending the practical classes, make sure to familiarise yourself with the Background Information in order to be prepared to commence the practical. There are then a suite of guides and videos to help you with generic skills as well as tasks/understanding specific to each practical.
There is no practical report associated with the Biochemistry practical; instead, the assessment task involves submission of a worksheet presenting the data you collected in class and a series of Discussion questions to answer individually after the practical.
You have 48 hours from the end of the practical to complete the Biochemistry worksheet and upload it via the course Blackboard site. You should be careful to upload it to the correct link for the Biochemistry practical class and your practical Group; otherwise, your work will NOT be visible to your tutor for marking in time.
Upon submission of the Osmosis, Action Potential and Skeletal Muscle reports, and the Biochemistry worksheet, you will need to generate a digital Turnitin receipt confirming your work has been successfully submitted; proof of submission will be accepted only by providing this digital receipt so make sure to always check that you have received this.
You must submit all of your practical assessments even if they are very late. If you miss your session for a practical for any reason, it is not possible to attend a different practical session, and you are still expected to complete and submit the associated assessment for that practical. You can still complete the practical assessments using resources in Blackboard and more information about this is available in Blackboard.
Within the worksheet, content showing experimental results are allowed to be identical to those of your other group members, though you can make your own improvements if you wish. However, all answers to the Discussion questions must be your own individual work.
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance. A failure to reference AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI tools.
Submission guidelines
The practical report, including the fully completed electronic coversheet on the first page, must be submitted via the relevant Turnitin link in the course Blackboard site, by the submission deadline. You may submit drafts to Turnitin up to the due date, but you will only be able to submit once on or after the due date. It is your responsibility to download a digital receipt of your submission. You should also keep an electronic copy of every piece of assessment you submit.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Requests for extension must be made prior to the submission deadline, even if you are awaiting your supporting documentation. Late requests for extension will not be accepted for consideration unless you provide evidence of exceptional circumstances preventing you from submitting a request prior to the deadline, e.g., due to hospitalisation.
If you have been granted an extension, then the assessment specified late submission penalty in the table above will apply to submissions made after the due date of the approved extension.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.
If you are experiencing technical difficulties uploading your submission, please email a copy of your assessment to sbms@enquire.uq.edu.au so this can be logged on your behalf before the due date.

There are then a suite of guides and videos to help you with generic skills as well as tasks/understanding specific to each practical.
Reports - Professional scientists communicate the findings of their research by going to conferences and publishing work in peer-reviewed journals. Submitting work to either of these has a very rigid format which needs to be followed. For the Osmosis, Action Potential and Skeletal Muscle practicals, your prac reports in BIOM1051 will be structured around exactly the same format and require similar levels of detail in each of the sections. This is to help you apply what you have learned to the course objectives for BIOM1051 and prepare you for your professional careers after university.
A laboratory report template for the Osmosis practical will be provided to you via Blackboard. It is your responsibility to ensure you can access this. During the practical, you will design and conduct experiments and collect data to include in your report file, which you will save and email to yourself.
You then have 48 hours from the end of the Osmosis practical to complete the report and upload it via the course Blackboard site. The end of semester exam will be based on content covered in all of the lecture modules, workshops and overlapping practical content. The exam will be for 90 marks total, with a combination of different question types, covering each module of the course giving a total of 90 marks for the 90 min exam. The allocation of marks to each module will be roughly based on the number of lectures and workshops in that module.
The exam will be a closed book invigilated exam held on campus and undertaken via the Inspera eAssessment platform. Students will be required to bring a laptop to the exam that meets the device requirements for Inspera. It is important that you check before the exam that your laptop meets the device requirements for using the Inspera Assessment platform. If you do not own a suitable laptop, you can borrow one from the Library. The Library website Get familiar with Inspera provides the latest information for students about using Inspera. Further information about the exam will be provided on Blackboard.
Have your UQ student ID card available for all of your exams.
This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
