An integrated pathophysiology and related pharmacology in human disease relevant to allied health sciences. Students will be introduced to the physiology of major systems (nervous, respiratory, vascular, endocrine) and how the process of ageing can disrupt these systems and lead to disease. Students will be introduced to common medicinal drugs used in the treatment of conditions mentioned in this course.
BIOM2015 Physiology and Pharmacology of Human Disease provides a comprehensive overview of integrated pathophysiology and related treatment in human disease relevant to allied health sciences.ᅠIt involves three (3) lectures per week, seven (7) practical sessions across the semester, and a multimedia communication task presented in written or video format about a disease topic relevant to the concepts covered in the course.
Trigger Warning -
BIOM2015 covers various pathologies related to the 7 modules of the course. Learning activities will involve engaging in workshops and practicals that introduce you to some of these diseases through donated human pathology specimens and in one case, the lived experiences of people living with Parkinson's Disease. Some information will be available prior to each learning activity to help inform you of what to expect, and you are welcome to contact the course coordinator to find out more. Students unable to fully participate for medical, personal or religious reasons, should discuss their situation with the Course Coordinator prior to enrolment.
Of special note:
The Integrated Pathology Learning Centre (IPLC) contains potted human specimens. People may have chosen to donate their tissues and bodies for teaching and research, or this tissue may have been collected legally during surgery or autopsy.
We recognise the benefit of using human tissue for learning, teaching and scholarship, and extend our gratitude and recognition to the people from whom the tissue originated, their loved ones, and their communities. It is necessary to treat resources derived from these tissues in an ethically appropriate manner.
This includes:
- Limited handling of specimens when in the museum. Keep the specimen on the shelf and carefully rotate if needed.
- Do not consume food or drink (apart from water) while in the museum space.
- No photography or videoing unless specifically required by your lecturer (see infographic on photography within the IPLC).

The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.
Additional timetable information
Four of the practical sessions occur in the Integrated Pathology Learning Centre (IPLC) at Herston campus and will require students to travel to this location.
Aims and outcomes
Students undertaking BIOM2015 should understand and appreciate that:
- Human physiological systems maintain health throughout life;
- Ageing processes can disrupt homeostasis which may lead to acute illness, chronic health disorders and/or death;
- The activity of pharmacological agents that treat acute illnesses and chronic health disorders associated with ageing is reliant on the physiological mechanisms.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
identify and explain the structure and function of physiological systems
LO2.
analyse and describe how physiological systems function in health and disease
LO3.
explain the regulation and integration of physiological systems
LO4.
describe the effects of ageing on physiological systems in health and disease
LO5.
integrate the mechanisms of drug actions and physiological systems in disease states
LO6.
explore the practical application of human pathophysiology and explain the theoretical basis for experimental outcomes
LO7.
effectively communicate complex biological concepts in health and disease orally and/or in written form to a range of audiences.

Task description
There will be SEVEN (7) practical sessions in BIOM2015, with students individually completing a specific in-class assessment for submission by the end of each practical. These assessments aim to reinforce, complement or extend your understanding of lecture content and in some cases, promote your self-reflection on your developing identity as a future health professional.
Each in-class practical assessment contributes 5%, with a total of FIVE (5) assessments out of the SEVEN (7) available, culminating in the maximum 25% toward your grade. There are no extensions or deferrals on any of these tasks, and you must attend your allocated practical Group.
More details about this assessment will be provided during the semester via classes and Blackboard.
This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
Submissions must be completed in-class during practicals.
Deferral or extension

- L01, L02, L03, L04, L05, L07
Task description
The Multimedia Communication Task will require you to create an evidence-based communication piece about a disease of your choosing (from a select list), designed to inform the health professional audience. The task is worth 25% of your course grades. You will have the option to complete this task as a written or video communication piece:
- The Written option is completed as individual work.
- The Video option is completed either individually OR as a group of 2 students.
To support your progressive work toward this assessment task, you will have the opportunity to submit draft work to receive formative feedback. This feedback will focus on the general direction your work is heading in and some suggestions about areas for improvement to help you meet the final task expectations. This is completely optional and is a formative task; it does not contribute to your final grade in BIOM2015.
HOWEVER, if you wish to have your draft work looked at and feedback given, you must submit your piece by the due date. Extensions are not possible as this is a formative task and submissions after this date won't be considered.
More details about this formative opportunity and the summative assessment task will be provided during the semester via classes and Blackboard.
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance. A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI and MT tools.
Submission guidelines
Instructions for submitting the formative and optional Draft task will be provided via Blackboard.
Deferral or extension
You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.
Extensions are not possible for this formative task. You need to submit your Draft work to whatever degree of completeness you have achieved by the due date, in order for it to be examined and some feedback provided to you. You can seek additional feedback on your evolving plans and ideas by speaking with the Course Coordinator during any of the practical sessions or via email.
Late submission
No late submissions are permitted.
