An integrated pathophysiology and related pharmacology in human disease relevant to allied health sciences. Students will be introduced to the physiology of major systems (nervous, respiratory, vascular, endocrine) and how the process of ageing can disrupt these systems and lead to disease. Students will be introduced to common medicinal drugs used in the treatment of conditions mentioned in this course.

BIOM2015 Physiology and Pharmacology of Human Disease provides a comprehensive overview of integrated pathophysiology and related pharmacology in human disease relevant to allied health sciences.ᅠIt involves three (3) lectures per week, seven (7) practical sessions across the semester, and communication task presented in written or video format about a disease topic relevant to the concepts covered in the course.

Course requirements

Assumed background

Background knowledge in cell biology and the structure, function and integration of human body systems.ᅠ

Prerequisites

You'll need to complete the following courses before enrolling in this one:

(BIOL1020 + BIOL1040) or (BIOM1050 + ANAT1005) or (BIOM1070 + BIOM1071)

Timetable

The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.

Additional timetable information

Three of the practical sessions occur in the Integrated Pathology Learning Centre (IPLC) at Herston campus and will require students to travel to this location. These practicals are directly related to the communication task completed over the semester.

Aims and outcomes

Students undertaking BIOM2015 should understand and appreciate that:

  • Human physiological systems maintain health throughout life;
  • Ageing processes can disrupt homeostasis which may lead to acute illness, chronic health disorders and/or death;
  • The activity of pharmacological agents that treat acute illnesses and chronic health disorders associated with ageing is reliant on the physiological mechanisms.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

identify and explain the structure and function of physiological systems

LO2.

analyse and describe how physiological systems function in health and disease

LO3.

explain the regulation and integration of physiological systems

LO4.

describe the effects of ageing on physiological systems in health and disease

LO5.

integrate the mechanisms of drug actions and physiological systems in disease states

LO6.

explore the practical application of human pathophysiology and explain the theoretical basis for experimental outcomes

LO7.

effectively communicate complex biological concepts in health and disease orally and/or in written form to a range of audiences.

These assessment tasks evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Students are advised that the use of AI technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submission guidelines

We recommend not using the Blackboard Phone App or a wireless network connection when completing the quiz. Both are unstable:

- you may lose connection and the work you have completed

- it may appear that you have completed the quiz, but it has not been delivered to Blackboard.

‘Save’ your answers regularly in Blackboard to avoid losing any of your work on the quiz questions.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

Requests for extension must be made prior to the submission deadline, even if you are awaiting your supporting documentation. Late requests for extension will not be accepted for consideration unless you provide evidence of exceptional circumstances preventing you from submitting a request prior to the deadline, e.g., due to hospitalisation.

If you have been granted an extension, then the assessment specified late submission penalty in the table above will apply to submissions made after the due date of the approved extension.

Task description

This assessment is broken into two parts, with the overall goal of individually preparing a written text on a selected topic.

For Part A, you will submit a Project Outline, which will give you the opportunity to obtain and apply feedback as you prepare Part B, the final, complete multimedia communication task.

More details about this assessment will be provided in person during class, and via resources in Blackboard.

This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require you to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance. A failure to reference AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct. To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI tools.

Submission guidelines

You must submit your Assessment task, with the electronic coversheet available under Undergraduate - Assessment on the School's website (https://biomedical-sciences.uq.edu.au/student-support/resources), to Turnitin by the submission deadline.

You may submit drafts to Turnitin up to the due date, but you will only be able to submit once on or after the due date.

You should also keep an electronic copy of every piece of assessment you submit.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 21 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

This task is designed to enable you to receive feedback for completion of the Final Project task. A maximum of 3 weeks extension has been set for this task so to allow sufficient time for feedback to be generated and returned to you prior to the due date for the Final Project task.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

If you are experiencing technical difficulties uploading your submission, please email a copy of your assessment to sbms@enquire.uq.edu.au so this can be logged on your behalf before the due date.
