An advanced course providing an integrated approach to the anatomy, biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, pathology and pharmacology of the endocrine system. This course covers secretion and physiological roles of blood-borne and local hormonal mediators. This includes hormonal signalling and mechanisms regulating cell growth, metabolism, reproduction, and cardio-renal function. This course also examines consequences of and treatments for defects in the endocrine system, illustrated using clinical disorders that affect many people world-wide (e.g. those arising from obesity).

This course is aimed at illustrating how the disciplines of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology integrate to provide a basis for an understanding of human endocrinology.

BIOM3020 is designedᅠto build on the knowledge base and skills developed in second level physiology. This course focusses onᅠunderstanding howᅠwhole body processes and function are regulated by hormone secretion and action. Students will gain an understanding of how endocrine dysregulation contributes to pathophysiology and disease. The lecture content is based onᅠ3 major themes:

  1. Neuroendocrinology and metabolism
  2. Reproduction and pregnancy
  3. Hormonal control of cardiovascular and renal function

We will examine the unique structure of endocrine glands and how this allows for hormone production and secretion. This will be integrated with an in-depth examination of the function of hormones in their target tissue.ᅠFinally, we shall discuss a variety of endocrine-related disorders and the current treatment therapies available.

The theme of endocrine structure and function is continued in the laboratory component of BIOM3020. During the first practical module, ‘Anatomical Features of the Endocrine System’, students will examine preserved anatomical specimens detailing gross anatomy of normal endocrine-related structures. For the second practical module, ‘Cardio-metabolic health, lifestyle and body composition’, students will be part of a clinical study as both participant and researcher and will collect and analyse data of metabolic and cardiovascular function, complete clinically relevant assessments of diet and exercise, and measure body composition using ‘gold standard’ air displacement plethysmography. In the final practical, ‘Histology of reproductive organs’, students will use virtual slides to investigate both normal and pathological samples from a variety of endocrine tissues in the reproductive system.ᅠ

Course requirements

Assumed background

Students are expected to have completed BIOM2012. They are also expected to have some basic statistical training (i.e. an understanding of P-values and basic hypothesis testing using Student's t-test, ANOVA, correlations etc).ᅠCompletion of second level biochemistry and pharmacology coursesᅠwould also be advantageous.

Prerequisites

You'll need to complete the following courses before enrolling in this one:

BIOM2012

Incompatible

You can't enrol in this course if you've already completed the following:

BIOL3230

Course contact

Course staff

Timetable

The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.

Aims and outcomes

This course provides an advanced understanding of hormones and their regulation. The focus is on hormone action and how endocrine dysregulation is linked toᅠlifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome andᅠsocietal problems such as infertility. We shallᅠexamine what can be done to address these clinical problems. Understanding endocrine regulation andᅠthe feedback mechanisms that control endocrine function is a major theme of this unit.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Recognise and describe the structure and function of endocrine organs at the macro- and micro-level.

LO2.

Explain the role of hormones in maintaining homeostasis.

LO3.

Describe the molecular regulation of metabolic processes and its impact upon cell, tissue and whole body function.

LO4.

Recognise and explain the role of hormonal and metabolic dysfunction in diseases of current major concern, e.g. diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, infertility.

LO5.

Apply skills in written scientific communication, including comprehension of research articles.

LO6.

Apply critical thinking, and practical skills in the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and presentation of scientific data.

LO7.

Reflect on your approach to self-regulated learning and development of discipline-specific and 'soft' skills through engaging in meta-learning tasks.

Requirements for the MasteringEndo Series

This series of SEVEN (7) assessments spans the entire semester and includes:

  1. TWO (2) meta-learning reflection tasks (each worth 2.5% - total 5%), and
  2. FIVE (5) content-based assessment tasksᅠ(each worth 5%; best of 4 for 20%).

Therefore, the maximum possible contribution to the final grade is 25%.

These assessments are designed to support mastery of the concepts taught in lectures and practicals and prepare students for the exams.

Hurdle requirements for this course

To pass this course you must meet ALL the following hurdle requirements:

  1. You must PASS the in-semester and EOS exams COMBINED. Given the mid-semester exam is worth 20% and the EOS exam is worth 35%, contributing a total of 55% to the final grade, this means you must obtain 27.5% or above.
  2. A reasonable attempt must be made of the cardio-metabolic practical report. An explanation of what constitutes a 'reasonable attempt' will be provided in the Practical Tutorial lecture, as well as in practical classes.

If a student obtains an overall percentage greater than the cut-offs set to achieve a 4 or higher for the course and does NOT successfully complete the hurdles, they are unable to achieve a grade higher than a 3 (failing grade) for the course.
