Recent developments in lead discovery, natural products, high throughput and high content screening, GLP/GCRP/GMP; dosage formulations, preclinical evaluation of new drug entities, assays and the drug pipeline, clinical evaluation of new drugs, human and animal ethics, registration of novel compounds from these drug discovery processes, licensing. It is strongly recommended that students have a solid background in organic chemistry before enrolling in this course.

This course will introduce you to Drug Discovery and Development, a rapidly expanding and critical component of contemporary biotechnology. The focus of the course is on the processes behind identifying novel drugs and their targets, and the steps required to take this drug intendedᅠfor human use to the market, including the preclinical and clinical development process.

Assumed background

The assumed background is a basic understanding ofᅠbiochemical and pharmacological concepts. A student who has covered only one of these areas at Level 2 should be able to cope, but in this case you should discuss your background knowledge with the course coordinators early in the semester.

Aims and outcomes

This course will provide an understanding of how drug targets and compounds and are identified, and developed into drug products for final human consumption. It will cover drug and target discovery, product formulation, preclinical and clinical evaluation of drugs and the role of regulatory bodies, licensing, and final registration of these compounds for human use.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Whilst students may use AI technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.

To pass this assessment, students will be required to demonstrate detailed comprehension of their written submission independent of AI tools.

Presentation of debate:

This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description

A component (5% of the final course mark) of the Pharmaco debate assessment will be a peer group assessment. You will provide a score out of 5 for each of your debate group members that reflects their contribution to your group’s activities in preparation for the debate.

Task description

You are to choose one of the Debate topics that has not already been assigned to your group for the oral Debate. 

You are required to write a critical, but balanced, appraisal of the major arguments for each side of the topic. The aspects that are of paramount importance are demonstrating that you have an understanding of the background and, in particular, making an intelligent attempt at critical appraisal. You will need to refer to related articles to support your arguments in your written report.

This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.

 A mock negotiation of license for a product, which will involve the negotiation of a deal between two parties. The licence negotiation will be face to face on campus, unless health advice relating to on campus work change, in which case they will be undertaken via zoom.

The exam will be a closed book on-campus exam. Have your UQ student ID card available for all your exams.
