Uses of information systems in organisations, management of information systems. Overview of computers and information systems; information systems development, implementation and operation. Practical experience with spreadsheets, database management and other business applications software for business problems.
Information systems play a central role in numerous ways in an organisation, and they are the lifeblood of any organisation. In your career your ability to understand, but also to improve and optimise information systems in organisations and society in general is a fundamental skill to possess. The knowledge taught in this course will provide you with the ability to sense, respond and create change using information systems to build value for your organisation.
BISM7202 (Information Systems for Management) introduces students to information systems, their use, and various related management (business process management and business analytics), design (IS development), and strategic (digital and shared economy) considerations within the business world and context. The course will provide students with a broad understanding of the role information systems play in modern organisations, how they enable organisations to improve efficiency and effectiveness, as well as how they evolve to address dynamic needs. The course will also enable students to reason about the impact that technology has more broadly on business operations. Students will also gain practical skills in using applications to solve business problems, including using Microsoft Excel to capture relevant business data and analyse information to support decision making within organisations.

Aims and outcomes
The use of information systems continues to transform organisations. These entities need professionals that have both a strong theoretical understanding and tangible practical skills in applying, improving and adapting information systems. This course aims to alert students to the relevance of information systems within the business world through an exploration of topical issues, including the digital economy, business process management, information systems development, and business analytics.ﾠ It will also develop students’ information systems literacy through theoretical exploration and practical use of applications such as Microsoft Excel, and help students develop an ongoing interest in exploring new possibilities and to gain the confidence to face future challenges in a global digitalised world.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Apply theoretical knowledge of information systems fundamentals as well as the latest trends in information systems and technology practice in your future careers.
LO2.
Analyse and critically evaluate the impacts (including ethical and sustainability impacts) information systems (including artificial intelligence) have on individuals, organisations, and society as a whole.
LO3.
Demonstrate a basic level of knowledge of the different types of information systems such as artificial intelligence and data analytics tools.
LO4.
Understand the importance of information systems as knowledge, decision and business intelligence tools for managers.
LO5.
Develop skills to make informed decisions on the development and installation of new information systems and the upgrade of existing information systems, including the development of spreadsheets to support business decision-making.

Task description
A foundational Excel Spreadsheet is provided for students to modify and update to meet the challenges presented in the Case Specification.
The assignment MUST be done individually. The assignment may also include self-learning components that cover content/knowledge not present in the tutorials. It is expected that the student will undertake their own research to master this component.
Assessment Criteria may include Formulas & Functions, PivotTables, PivotCharts, and Charts, Database & Advanced Functions, What-if Analysis, Solver, General Aspects, Reflections Quality, and other relevant measures. More details will be provided on Blackboard.
As part of the assignment, students will write an essay and share their reflections on the process of developing the solution.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides emerging tools that may support students in completing this assessment task. Students may appropriately use AI in completing this assessment task. Students must reference any use of AI in each instance. A failure to reference generative AI use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
