Innovation is executing new ideas to create value. While we often think of innovation as creating new products based on research and development, it is clear that finding new ways to create value for people is an essential leadership task in service settings as well. This course looks at the fundamentals of innovation management from the perspective of service-based organisations. This will include service design from the users' perspective, building innovation management processes, and the discovery, design and validation of innovative service business models.
This course will equip you with an understanding that innovation is more than a "great idea". Once completed, you should be able to apply the tools and techniques explored back into your own contexts to create value.

Task description
For your own organisation or an aspirational organisation of your choosing, using the principles of innovation covered in this course, complete the Innovation Thesis worksheet, analysing the organisation's current situation and future opportunities. To ensure your analysis is complete, accurate, and without bias, you will also record yourself giving a 3 to 5 minute reflection, talking on what you have learnt and thinking critically about your own feelings, thoughts, reactions, behaviours or challenges you faced, making connections between what you already know and what you are learning, between theory and practice or between key issues discussed in the course and personal experiences.
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.
A failure to reference generative AI or MT use may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description
A Business Model Canvas is a strategic management and lean startup tool that can be used to document or track the development of new business models. Additionally, a BMC can be used to utilise business models to create new strategic alternatives.
The BMC is a hands on tool that allows an organisation to align their activities across four main areas of business:
- the organisation/products value proposition,
- infrastructure,
- customers, and
- finances.
An organisation might develop one or more BMCs to track all of their activities.
You will walk through the creation of the different segments of a Business Model Canvas (BMC), with your organisation or an organisation of your choosing. You will populate a document that will help you create your own BMC. You will need to select an innovation idea that you would like to develop, or an innovative product or service that you are already familiar with. The more that you know about your innovation, the easier it will be to complete the 9 segments of the BMC.

You will develop a plan for testing and implementing the new Business Model that you developed in Assessment Piece 2. This involves the tools and concepts developed throughout the course to address issues such as:
- If the Business Model is completely new, how will you test it? Which parts of the Business Model are the most important to validate?
- If the Business Model is an evolution of an existing one, how will you move from your current Business Model to the new one?
- Is there a way to innovate the meaning of the service that your Business Model provides?
- What social impacts and ethical issues must you consider as you implement this new Business Model? How can you manage these?
- Will your organisation be operating more than one core Business Model? If so, what are the synergies and trade-offs between the Business Models?
- How will you persuade internal and external stakeholders to adopt the new Business Model?
The length of this report will be 2,000 - 2,500 words.
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.
