This course will consist of practical training, going some way towards addressing the market place need for industry-ready chemists with relevant practical skills. A laboratory intensive experience with the attendant exposure to quantitative & qualitative analytical skills as well as other core laboratory competencies including synthetic chemistry will be taught. A lecture component is included in order to enhance and develop many of the instrumental techniques employed in the laboratory.

Chemistry is an experimental science. The combination of CHEM2054, CHEM2050/CHEM2901, CHEM2060/CHEM2902 and CHEM3016, in addition to more specialised courses such as CHEM3001, CHEM3004, CHEM3010, CHEM3011, CHEM3020, CHEM3030, will give students the chemistry background and laboratory experiences essential for advancement to either a position in industry or further postgraduate study. As CHEM3016 is the 3rd year Chemistry capstone course, it must be taken by all students who wish to graduate with a Chemistry major.ᅠ

Course requirements

Assumed background

It is required that students taking CHEM3016 have completed CHEM2054, CHEM2050 (or CHEM2901) and CHEM2060 (or CHEM2902).

It is your responsibility to be aware of the necessary background and to be prepared for the experiments in CHEM3016. There is no provision for extensions or exemptions from submitting laboratoryᅠreports on the due dates based on lack of knowledge/theory. Inᅠaddition, lack of previous knowledge is not a reason for special consideration.

You will gain most value from this course if you have either completed third level chemistry courses in semester 1 or if you are doing other third level chemistry courses alongside with CHEM3016 in this semester.ᅠ

There will be a lecture session scheduled on each Monday (check mySI-net for detailed timetable information)ᅠand you are expected to attend these essential lectures.ᅠThe lecture topics will be on analytical chemistry, data analysis, theoretical chemistry and selected other topics. The lecture sessions will also be used to provide feedback, for discussions of laboratory reports and as information sessions. These are an opportunity to ask questions about the experiments and the course and for general discussion. There will be a lecture on the FIRST Monday of the semester (i.e. Week 1): you need information from this lecture to complete the task in Week 1.

The schedule for the laboratory sessions throughout the semester is as below.ᅠ

Week 1 will have a compulsory Lab Induction, Course Introductionᅠand and a analytical dry prac (pass/fail).

Weeks 2-4 will be wet pracs for core skills, containing three scheduled experiments. Each experiment will take about 6 hours to complete. The deadline for submission of each experiment worksheet is 3 days once conducting the experiment (at 2pm) (i.e. Tuesday group due on Friday; Wednesday/Thursday groups due on Monday; Friday group due on Tuesday).ᅠ

Weeks 5-7 will be analytical wet pracs, involving scheduled analytical experiments.ᅠEach experiment will take about 6 hours to complete and you areᅠ STRONGLY advised to arrange your lecture schedule such that you can attend the laboratory for one full 6-hour period on one day.ᅠIn fact,ᅠyou probably will NOT be able to complete the experiments effectively unless you set aside one 6-hour period in the one day. ᅠPlease note that post Week 7, these experiments will no longer be available. ᅠIf you miss one of these experiments, it is your responsibility to make up the missed experiment. The deadline for submission of each experiment report is 6 days once conducting the experiment (at 2pm) (i.e. Tuesday group due on Monday; Wednesday group due on Tuesday; Thursday group due on Wednesday; Friday group due on Thursday).ᅠ

Weeks 8-12 will involve an extended project. The deadline for the project report submission is at 2 pm of your project day of the Exam Week (i.e. 11th-14th Nov).

In Week 13, thereᅠwill be a prac exam, including written and oral examinations. Timetable will be provided in course blackboard site. More details will be provided in the leccture of Week 12.

Please note that current listed 1L3P3C contact hours are effectively equivalent to 1L6P, where the 6P may include data analysis (e.g. when some experiments in the lab may take less than 6 hours). This might be reversed back to 1L3P3C if a higher level of restriction will be applied due to situations such as a new COVID outbreak wave.ᅠ

A student undertaking this course will complete a portfolio of core laboratory competencies, including analytical chemistry, synthetic chemistry, molecular modelling, communication skills and problem solving skills.

Task description

You are required to purchase and maintain an accurate LABORATORY NOTEBOOK for all experiments. It should be written legibly such that anybody else could follow it and obtain the same results. It should be written in ink/pen, not pencil (nor printed texts, nor chemical structures, except acquired data from equipment). Details of how to keep a Laboratory Notebook is available in a how-to-guide on the Chem Lab Hub. Details of where to buy a Laboratory Notebook is also on the CHEM Lab Hub. A marking sheet will be available to help your understanding of achievements of the requirements.

Please note that all Laboratory Notebooks must be not removed from Level 5 of Chemistry Building. If a Laboratory Notebook is not present in the lab when marking takes place, zero marks will be awarded for the section being marked.

Submission guidelines

The Laboratory Notebook cannot be removed from Level 5 of Chemistry Building (68). If you will need your lab Notebook for other courses, talk to or email the course coordinator (A/Prof Lo, s.lo@uq.edu.au) for approval. Keep your Laboratory Notebook on Level 5 of Chemistry Building for assessment marking. Marking criteria are available in the course Blackboard site.

Absence of any Laboratory Notebook while marking will be awarded a fail mark for the prac.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Lab notebooks are for recording items prior to and during the lab session. As such, it is not possible for the extension of the task.

Task description

The completion of a guided report is required for the Analytical Experiments. The guided report templates can be obtained from Blackboard. It is your responsibility to think about what key information must be recorded in the laboratory book during the lab session. The guided reports are submitted via Blackboard using the report templates. These experiments are assessed on the basis of the precision and accuracy of your results as well as based on clarity in presentation of data and calculations. You will be required to include error analysis where applicable.

Absence from a Proactical Session

You must attend 100% of the laboratory component of this course.

If you are unable to attend your timetabled practical session due to circumstances beyond your control (e.g. illness), you must submit a practical absence request immediately accompanied by acceptable supporting documentation that covers the date of the missed practical.

Experiment 1

The experimental write-up for Experiment 1 will take the form of a worksheet which will be submitted at the end of the scheduled experiment (Week 1) and marked as pass/fail. To get a pass grade, you need to achieve >80% marks.

Experiments 2-4

The experimental write-up for Experiments 2-4 is to be submitted 3 days once conducting the scheduled experiment (at 2pm) (i.e. Tuesday group due on Friday; Wednesday/Thursday groups due on Monday; Friday group due on Tuesday). Submit your completed Result Sheet Turnitin submission (without a coversheet).

Experiments 5-7

The experimental write-up for Experiments 5-7 is to be submitted 6 days once conducting the scheduled experiment (at 2pm) (i.e. Tuesday group due on Monday; Thursday group due on Wednesday; Friday group due on Thursday). Submit your completed report online Turnitin submission (without a coversheet).

Project Report

The Project report (for the work of Weeks 8-12) is to be submitted in the Exam period Week (i.e. 4th-7th Nov) of your prac day (at 2pm) through Turnitin in the course Blackboard site (without a coversheet).

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

Discretionary extensions are not available for this task.

Late submission

A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

You are required to submit assessable items on time. If you fail to meet the submission deadline for any assessment item, then 10% of the maximum possible mark for the assessment item (assessment ‘marked from’ value) will be deducted as a late penalty for every day (or part day) late after the due date. For example, if you submit your assignment 1 hour late, you will be penalised 10%; if your assignment is 24.5 hours late, you will be penalised 20% (because it is late by one 24-hour period plus part of another 24-hour period). 10% will be deducted per day for up to 7 calendar days, at which point your submission will receive a mark of zero (0) unless an extension has been approved.

In most instances one or more hurdles will apply to your assessment item so you will need to submit it to fulfil the requirements of the course regardless of how late it is and the mark you are likely to be awarded.

The "Prac Exam" will cover selected material from the lectures (Weeks 1-11), concepts and contents from Experiments 1-7, and your Project (& your Project lectures) as well as the Essential knowledge (details available on Blackboard). The Prac Exam will be OPEN BOOK. The assessment is worth a total of 30%. The Prac Exam will be held in your scheduled prac session of Week 13 with more detailed information provided in Blackboard. Due date will be the allocated prac examination day.

Assessment Hurdles

In order to pass this course, you must meet ALL of the following requirements (if you do not meet these requirements, the maximum grade you will receive will be a 3):

1. You must obtain an overall mark of 50% or more on the practical exam and

2. You must complete, and pass, 100% of the laboratory component of the course.

The scheduled lecture time (Mondays) will be used for the delivery of lectures on analytical chemistry, data analysis, core chemistry skills, DFT calculations, and projects as well as in-class discussion. Practical

Laboratory experiments

Students are required to complete a series of set laboratory experiments, commencing from Week 1. These are designed to cover various topics in analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry. There is also an extended project. For this extended project, there will be a choice of experiments - the choices will be detailed on the CHEM3016 Blackboard page. You choose ONE project. You work alone, NOT in PAIRS. Collusion will be STRONGLY discouraged. There will be a minimum number of "places" available for each experiment and once those places are full that particular experiment is considered closed. An online signing system will be used.

Risk assessment for each prac must be completed prior to each scheduled prac session for approval. If your risk assessment will not be endorsed before 10:15am, you need to reschedule the prac, where reschedule penalty will apply--see reschedule in the Addition Information.

For each scheduled pac day, students are expected to spend 6 hours in the lab to conduct the scheduled lab work, including cleaning and data analysis
