Task description
From Week 2 to Week 12, for each new unit, students are required to do an in-class dictation during Tutorial class on Monday. This task is to help students develop mastery of the new vocabulary for each unit to be learnt. In the first 10 minutes of your Monday tutorial class, the instructor will read 10 words from the new vocabulary list. You are required to write down each word in character. Each word will be read three times. A hard copy of the worksheets will be provided to you in class (and will also be made available on Blackboard during the week). Your instructor will collect it each time after you complete the task, mark it and return to you in the following week for you to use it again. Week 1 will run a practice in class.

Task description
Students will complete and submit a portfolio of three writing tasks on designated topics throughout the semester. These tasks are designed to develop students' writing skills progressively through a structured process of feedback and revision. Regular engagement with writing practice is essential to achieving the learning outcomes of this course.
Each writing task requires two rounds:
(1) Handwritten hard copy: students are asked to submit handwritten writing tasks in WEEKS 3, 6 and 10 Tutorials. These tasks will be reviewed and returned during Thursday Tutorial in the following week for students to incorporate the feedback received.
(2) Typed Blackboard submission via Turnitin: studensts are asked to submit the revised version of the 3 writing tasks in WEEK 12. Students will need to use word processing to type the revised versions and then upload them to Blackboard via the Turnitin link provided in the folder “Writing Tasks” under “Assessment”.
The marking rubric for these tasks allocates a total of 15 marks per entry, with specific assessment criteria including students' engagement with the feedback provided during the draft stage. Please note that the overall result for submission of these tasks will be calculated at the end of semester, after 5pm, Thursday WEEK 12.
STATEMENT ON AI & MT
This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
Handwritten drafts are to be submitted in class and typed revised versions to be submitted altogether as a potfolio via Blackboard Turnitin.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 14 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Do not apply for extensions of individual draft submissions. Students are expected to engage with these tasks throughout the semester. This assessment is marked as whole after the submission due date. The maximum extension length ensures that assessors can provide timely feedback, supporting the progressive, sequential, and cumulative nature of language learning that underpins this course.

Course grading
Full criteria for each grade is available in the Assessment Procedure.
Grade | Cut off Percent | Description |
---|---|---|
1 (Low Fail) | 0 - 24 |
Absence of evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: Not achieving any of the course objectives. |
2 (Fail) | 25 - 44 |
Minimal evidence of achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: None or very few of the course objectives are met. |
3 (Marginal Fail) | 45 - 49 |
Demonstrated evidence of developing achievement of course learning outcomes Course grade description: Ability to recognise and reproduce characters amounting to no more than twenty-five percent of those appearing in an examination paper. There is failure to observe grammatical rules and constructions. English translations represent non-understandings of the texts or inability to express their meaning acceptably. Little effort is demonstrated in class exercises. |
4 (Pass) | 50 - 64 |
Demonstrated evidence of functional achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: Must obtain at least fifty percent correctness in most areas of language skills, including character recognition, radical identification and simplified forms of traditional characters. Translation of phrases and sentences must show a fair grasp of Chinese grammatical construction, and an understanding of the basic meaning. Translations of prose will represent meaningful Chinese although it may lack colloquial fluency and accuracy. |
5 (Credit) | 65 - 74 |
Demonstrated evidence of proficient achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: Characters are recognised and reproduced with more facility and accuracy than average. Twenty-five percent is a guide for the number of characters omitted or written incorrectly. Phrase and sentence translation are fairly accurate while passage translation shows basic understanding of English grammar but a lack of style and expression. Translation of a prose passage must reflect at least an overall continuity of person, number, gender, tense and mood expressed in the English. Considerable effort and improvement are evident. |
6 (Distinction) | 75 - 84 |
Demonstrated evidence of advanced achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: Translations may be accurate but lack awareness of nuance, knowledge of idiom or fluent style. There may be slight inaccuracies in grammatical usage, a very few characters written incorrectly or omitted. Minimal failure to record simplified forms or full-form characters. Quality of character reproduction notably high. |
7 (High Distinction) | 85 - 100 |
Demonstrated evidence of exceptional achievement of course learning outcomes. Course grade description: Superior work. Error in character reproduction non-existent or rare. Accurate recognition of radicals and their meanings and complete awareness of the traditional full-forms of simplified characters. Translation of sentences and prose passages represent apposite choice of characters and words, and accurate grammatical construction. Translations reflect a thorough understanding of language nuance and colloquial idiom and are rendered fluently and expressively. |
