Further facets of spoken Chinese with immediate practical application.
Spoken Chinese IIB is an intermediate-level course providing instructions in oral and aural aspects of Modern Standard Chinese. Students use Romanised texts, audio materials, pair- and group-work activities, etc. to further develop their skills in speaking and listening to Mandarin Chinese.
Course requirements
Assumed background
Learners should have successfully completed CHIN2110 or CHIN3000 or equivalent. They should possess basic skills in standard Mandarin pronunciation and have a complete mastery of the pinyin romanisation system. A knowledge of the grammar structures and vocabulary of Contemporary Chinese Vol1 & Vol2 is assumed. Native or background speakers of Chinese may not enrol in this course, but should enrol in courses for native speakers.
Enrolment in CHIN3010 may be approved on the basis of knowledge or abilities which prospective students have gained other than by study at The University of Queensland, e.g., by study elsewhere, residence in a Chinese-speaking country, having Chinese-speaking background. Please also note that enrolments may be refused on the basis of such knowledge or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended. A student’s enrolment in a course for which s/he holds incompatible qualifications or proficiency levels may be cancelled. This cancellation may involve forfeiture of credit, and students may remain liable for course fees.

Task description
Language partnership will be set up between each student in CHIN3010 and a native speaker of Chinese. The native speaker and the learner as a pair will listen to some Chinese recording each week. Based on the recording, each should ask the other five questions in Chinese. The questions asked must be understood and relevant answers must be successfully elicited. In other words, the student must ask the native speaker 5 questions, get a relevant answer to each question and at the same time she/he must answer each of the 5 questions the native speaker asks. The question-answer interactions should be recorded on WeChat via “hold and talk” function in each individual group. Practice before the recording is not only allowed but also encouraged. The listening will be sent to everyone on Monday during weeks 2-11. The deadline for the recording is 8am on the following Monday.
Marks are deducted only when:
(1) No recorded communication is evident; (2) Recordings are too short (fail to ask 5 questions or fail to answer all of the 5 questions from your native speaker language partner.); (3) Submission of recording is too late; and (4) Recordings are not intelligible.
Statement on Generative AI & MT
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
(1) Each week 5 questions + 5 answers are successfully recorded;
(2) The recordings are clear and intelligible;
(3) Answers are relevant to the questions;
(4) For each pair the native speaker and learner should talk roughly with equal length. The total length of the pair recording should be no less than 6 minutes (recorded part) excluding preparation on your own.
(5) Recording is conducted and submitted before 8am on the following Monday after the topic is assigned on Monday. 10% is deducted for each day the submission is late.
(6) No penalty for language errors as far as communication is going well.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 7 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Maximum extension length allows assessors to give timely feedback before subsequent tasks are due.
Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description
You are required to give a speech in Chinese in front of your classmates. You can talk about anything related to the Chinese language and Culture. For example, you could describe your experience of learning Chinese, e.g. why you chose to study Chinese, what level you are at now, what fun/difficulties did you have in learning it, whether you will continue learning it, and how you hope to use these language skills in the future, and how will the language skills help you to realize your dreams, particularly how the learning of Chinese helps you form friendship with native speakers of Chinese or anyone else, how the learning of Chinese helps you become more open-minded and more understanding of the world we live in, etc. The length of your oral presentation is between 2.5 and 3 minutes.
Specific topics: 1. Why do I study Chinese; 2. My trip to China; 3. My Chinese friend; 4. I find the Chinese Culture fascinating; 5. My experiences in learning Chinese. Choose one of the topics listed or self-nominate a topic that is related to the Chinese language and culture for your oral presentation.
Text submission: You will need to submit the text in pinyin and/or characters by the time or before you give your talk. You can consult your language partner, but s/he will only give you assistance with grammar points and word usage you are unsure of. You are the one who will draft the speech, not anyone else.
The following aids are permitted during presentation:
1. One PPT slide is allowed, which is encouraged.
2. Palm cards can be used for occasional assistance. You are not allowed to simply read from it. If you do, it will be considered a reading, not a presentation, and you will gain a maximum mark of 50% only.
Criteria & Marking:
An overall assessment will be made that takes into account all of the following aspects of the presentation.
- Accuracy of pronunciation and tones
- Content
- Accuracy of grammar
- Fluency
- Presentation techniques (clear, loud voice, interaction with audience etc)
- Originality/Flair
Statement on Generative AI & MT
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic and complex. Whilst students may use AI and/or MT technologies, successful completion of assessment in this course will require students to critically engage in specific contexts and tasks for which artificial intelligence will provide only limited support and guidance.

Speaking is highly simplified and halting, often being single word responses with no initiation. Student does not fulfil minimal requirements to complete a task. Comprehension of spoken language is extremely limited. Lack of linguistic knowledge and limited use of strategies to locate information in written and spoken texts, leads to extremely limited comprehension. |
3 (Marginal Fail) | 45 - 49 |

Additional course grading information
Marking criteria and/or marking rubrics are available in the ‘Assessment’ folder in Blackboard for this course.
UQ is working to achieve greater equity in grading practices across the whole university. Until now, it has been easier to get high grades in some areas of study than in others. Assessment criteria and standards are therefore being modified to ensure they correspond to the grade descriptors above. In this course, the difficulty of passing the course has not changed, however the requirements to achieve a 6 or a 7 have been tightened, so that only outstanding achievement is rewarded by high grades.
