Advanced civil engineering design projects; philosophy of design and selection of systems; risk assessment; integrated design primarily focussing on hydraulics, coastal, environmental, geomechanics and transport engineering.
CIVL4516 provides the opportunity for engineers to work in teams to apply previously acquired engineering skills in environmental, hydraulics, transport and geotechnical courses to a practical engineering design project in a supportive environment. This course requires engineers to continue to develop their independence in developing solutions to engineering design problems. As such, you will be expected to:
- independently (individually and as part of a team) draw on and use knowledge and skills gained during the first 3 years of the BE Program across all courses
- independently address ambiguous and open-ended design problems typically encountered by professional engineers and justify your design choices using supporting evidence (including from research literature, guidelines, standards, previous reports, etc).
- independently locate, interpret and assimilate information (including research literature, guidelines, standards, etc.) that you haven't previously encountered, just as your employer would expect of you when you enter the workforce.
- develop the competencies, knowledge, skills, and attitudes towards effective teamwork that allow effective team contributors when faced with the demands of the job market.
- develop a design project with focus on a real company vision, mission, corporate values, objectives, and strategic planning.

The timetable for this course is available on the UQ Public Timetable.
Additional timetable information
CIVL4516 is an in-person offered course, with all briefing, conducted during scheduled class time.
Design briefing lectures (contact) and workshop sessions (weeks 1-13) are primarily for consultation and information provision. Some briefing last more than the one hour so there will be briefings that either extend into workshop sessions or be entirely in a workshop session.
Team sign-up will take place in week 1 and ending on Friday at 4 pm AEST, allowing you time to choose your team colleagues. After this, outstanding team membership matters (e.g., partially filled teams or students not assigned to a team) will be assigned by the course coordinator or their delegate. Students starting the course late will be required to complete the first assessment by themselves (with an allowance for reduced capacity). The process is, first sign up using the sign-up sheet in '' folder, obtaining consent of all members. Once team membership has been established and if you have 5 or 6 members, then please sign-up the entire team through Blackboard, available in the Team Information folder of the Blackboard course site. All other teams (i.e., with membership of 4 or less) to skip this step as the course coordinator will form your teams (including putting you into your Blackboard team).
As far as possible, the composition of the teams shall remain unchanged once this process is completed. Variations will occur if engineers are added/dropped by the course coordinator or their delegate to ensure all engineers are in teams, or under exceptional considerations and then only after discussion with and approval by the course coordinator.
Aims and outcomes
The aims of the course are to provide enrolled engineers with sufficient knowledge to be able to:
1. synthesise, consolidate and extend engineers' knowledge of engineering science, analysis and design, by the application of this knowledge to real civil engineering projects involvingᅠgeotechnical, hydraulics, transportᅠand environmental engineering issues.
2. give experience in integrated and collaborative design.
3. develop an understanding of how ethics and sustainability impact in infrastructure development.
4. appreciate the positive influence of a diversely skilled team on design outcomes.
5. give experience in the effective use of report writing and other means of communicating and understanding designs.
6. develop engineers' informal and formal spoken presentation skills.
7. develop independent research skills as they apply to multi-disciplinary design.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Design: select solutions to a complex design problem, design of civil engineering projects that involves a cross-section of fields of civil engineering (with a focus on the areas of geotechnical, hydraulics, transport and environmental engineering) and related disciplines.
LO2.
Independent research approach: Demonstrate an ability to independently judge design parameters and appraise design solutions. Select independent research to justify design proposals.
LO3.
Skills integration: apply knowledge and skills from various fundamental areas of engineering to design from the concept stage through to preliminary and final design.
LO4.
Communication: explain design/problem solutions using drawings and presentations, present a proposal to an audience which may include practicing engineers, clients and academics, defend a proposal and assemble constructive criticism into your design. Assemble verbal instructions that may arise during the course of the design process.
LO5.
Interdisciplinary interaction: work with and understand other professionals in an interdisciplinary design.

Task description
One truism in engineering design, work that cannot be reproduced or checked is worthless. Documenting your work assists in these matters.
As part of the team project all engineers are expected to keep their own individual workbook in which they keep their own records of, and notes on, their work. The workbook should contain design development (calculations and sketches or notes to electronic files used to do these), project management details (meeting minutes, Gantt charts etc) and a summary of actual progress in the previous week. It can be either paper or electronic.
The workbook may be reviewed by course coordinator or their delegate during the semester. These maybe unannounced, so students should always ensure that their workbooks are maintained to a high standard.
Your workbook must be available for inspection and assessment by course coordinator or their delegate at any time in Weeks 2 through 13.
If there is a disagreement within your team with regard to PAFs, your workbook may be taken into consideration when applying the outcomes of the peer assessment process to determine your result for the team reports.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Submission guidelines
Reviewed by tutor in workshop sessions throughout the semester as required.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Task description
To pass this course, all students must participate in the timetabled workshop sessions. Note the emphasis on participation - it is not sufficient just to attend.
Temporary exceptions for attendance via MS Teams/Zoom (arranged by students) will be permitted for students isolating with Covid or course clashes with another course - permission of the Course coordinator is required in both situations.
Students are expected to interact and engage with their team, academic staff and other members of the course during workshops sessions. If you are unable to attend any session, contact Course coordinator as soon as is possible.
The team, including all members, will formally meet with an academic staff member, or their delegate, at least once a week, during one of the weekly workshops. The team will not be advised in advance of their meeting time.
All members of the team will be required to provide a brief verbal report of progress to that point & outline any issues encountered. Any questions and requested proof to be provided by their individual logbook.
The coordinator may advise difference mechanism to assess your individual participation, including written reflections of material provided. These alternative arrangements will be communicated using blackboard.
This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI or MT may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Hurdle requirements
To pass this course, all students must participate in the timetabled workshop sessions. Note the emphasis on participation - it is not sufficient just to attend. Students who fail to participate adequately in workshop sessions across 3 or more weeks across weeks 2 to 12 inclusive will fail the course with a maximum grade of 3. Students who participate adequately will receive the grade directly from their submissions. Each student will be interviewed in person, each week during workshops, with their participate assessed as adequate if their participate exceeds 10 hours of individual or team work or team or sub-steam meetings or briefing lectures. During weeks with briefing lectures, notes from that lecture and how that information related to your design counts towards this weekly quantum of participation. Participation is recorded by the Course coordinator or their delegate weekly and published on the learning management system.Submission guidelines
Each student will be interviewed, once a week during one of the workshops, by the Course coordinator or their delegate.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 28 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
This assessment item is conducted weekly with enough flexibility that no extension or deferrals are required.

HURDLE REQUIREMENTS
Identity Verified Assessment: Active student participation (with your team, other students and staff) in all workshop classes is a requirement to ensure individual attainment of the learning outcomes of this course. Students who fail to participate adequately without approval from the course coordinator will fail the course with a maximum grade of 3.
PEER ASSESSMENT
Each team submission marks will be influenced by peer review; in extreme cases this peer weighting could cause your final mark to be elevated or demoted such that you receive a different grade to the rest of your team.
After submission of each assessment item, you will be asked to assess your peers and this mark will be used to scale each individual's team marks for that specific deliverable (for summative assessment).
This peer assessment requires you to assign marks to each of your team members and to indicate how you rate your own input. You are also required to supply a justification for your distribution of marks. The peer weighting factor will be calculated as an average of the scores assigned to each student (e.g. if you receive a PAF of 0.8, you will get 80% of the team mark component).
PAFs are capped at 1.1 which means that you can potentially receive an additional 10% of the team marks but that no student will be overly rewarded for effort in place of marks for the other CIVL4516 learning objectives.
The course coordinator will moderate the peer assessment to ensure that the marks are indicative of your performance; over estimation of your own contribution and/ orᅠclique-type assessment (where individuals are unfairly penalised or rewarded) will be removed.
If your mark assignations are significantly different from that of the rest of the team and are not sufficiently supported by the comments of yourself and the team, the course coordinator (in discussion with their colleagues) may remove your peer assessment from the final calculation of the peer weighting factors.
Should the peer assessment for your team indicate a large discrepancy between allocated marks, your team will be called in for discussion (and resolution) of issues within the team. If an agreement cannot be reached, the peer weighting will be devised by the coordinator and their colleagues, on observations made during the course of the semester.
There is no MINIMUM PAF.
If the course coordinator requests, you will be required to present your workbook for review as part of the Peer Moderation process.
