Participation is an important dimension of development targeting sustainable and equitable outcomes. Effective stakeholder identification and engagement in all stages of development planning, implementation and evaluation is key to assure the effectiveness of change processes and the sustainability of impact. This course explores the principles and practices of participatory development communication through self-directed learning activities, interactive workshops, a group assignment including real world practice, and an individual case study. It will give specific attention to interpersonal and intercultural communication skills and methodological implications when applying a participatory approach in development planning, implementation and evaluation. This is a compulsory course for the Communication for Social Change field of study of the Master of Communication, and a suitable elective for students from any program who would like to learn about facilitating stakeholder engagement.
Participatory Development Communication aims to facilitate development and social change in complex and sometimes conflicting environments. This course explores the principles and practices of Participatory Development Communication to help identify and implement change processes. Taking a practical approach, it enhances your capacity to effectively design and facilitate strategies for sustainable change in multi-stakeholder contexts.

Students will need to allocate 1.5 to 2 hours each week for the self-directed learning activities provided on Learn.UQ. These should be completed BEFORE attending the weekly workshops.ᅠ
Workshops are planned to last approximately 2.5 hours but may run for up to 3 hours in certain weeks.
Some additional time will have to be allocated for Assessment 2 fieldwork in Weeks 7-8.
Whilst every effort is made to place students in their preferred activity, it is not always possible for a student to be enrolled in their tutorial of choice. If you require assistance, please ensure that you email timetabling.commarts@enquire.uq.edu.au from your UQ student email with:

Task description
Learning about participation and facilitation can only be done effectively by experiencing various forms of participatory communication and reflecting on those experiences. You are, therefore, required to actively participate in and contribute to all class, group and online learning activities. As a record of your participation, your attendance at and contribution to the workshops will be recorded (Weeks 2-6, 8-11) and you complete a reflective worksheet based on a template provided. A detailed description and marking criteria are provided on Learn.UQ.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Submit the reflective worksheet (in docx or pdf format) in the ‘A1 PARTICIPATION’ Turn-it-in assignment box in the ASSESSMENT 1 area on Learn.UQ.

Task description
In small groups (3-5 people), you will design, conduct, analyse and report on a participatory situation analysis (PSA) relating to a real-life issue for a client. The client will have identified the issue that they want you to focus on. A detailed description and marking criteria are provided on Learn.UQ.
This assessment task evaluates students' abilities, skills and knowledge without the aid of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Translation (MT). Students are advised that the use of AI or MT technologies to develop responses is strictly prohibited and may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.
Recording of Oral and Practical Assessment
- All presentations will be recorded for marking purposes via recording facilities available where the assessment takes place (eg. ECHO360, Zoom, camera device)
- Recordings will be retained by the School of Communication and Arts for at least 12 months from the release of the final grade for the course.
- Recordings will be stored in a secure manner and will only be accessed by authorised school staff for the purposes of:
- Moderation of marking;
- Provision of feedback to the student(s) recorded; and/or
- Re-marking following a successful re-mark application.

You will analyse the existing communication strategy of the organisation or initiative, and redesign it by applying principles and methods of participatory development communication. Communication Expectations
While you are a student at UQ, all communication must be conducted according to the UQ Student Code of Conduct. The UQ Library has a helpful Communicate and collaborate online module.
- Email is the primary way for you to send messages to, and receive information from, the School and our staff.
- You must use your UQ email address (not a private address) to communicate with staff.
- You should add a clear subject line, including course code, and a 2-3 word statement.
- You can send email at any time, however please do not expect responses outside normal working hours (Monday to Friday from ~8am to ~5pm).
