Dental Practice IA will enable students to develop knowledge and essential communication skills to facilitate person centred dental care, and comply with legal and professional requirements in safe health care delivery. Students will begin to reflect critically on their approach to dental practice, demonstrate an in depth knowledge of tooth anatomy and conduct and record a thorough patient interview to collect relevant histories for preventive dental treatment.

Group 1 and 2 allocations will be confirmed during Orientation Week/at the beginning of the semester.ᅠ

Aims and outcomes

The course aims to introduce students to the dental clinic environment and to provide foundation knowledge and experience in fundamental processes and clinical aspects of dental practice.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Task description

This assessment takes the form of a quiz during a scheduled DENT1060 session consisting of a mix of multiple choice, true/false, matching, labelling and short answer questions. The examination will run for 60 minutes and the student will be required to bring their own device for the examination.

Task description

For a future health professional, the development of reflective practice skills which guide learning and foster a positive attitude toward life-long learning is an essential competency for a successful clinical practice career. The ability to engage in reflective practice facilitates learning throughout the BDSc (Hons) program and is a recognised hallmark of professional clinical practice.


This assessment task takes the form of submission of a 500 – 600 word (strict upper and lower word limits) original written personal reflection based on your own personal learning experience associated with one of the Virtual Patient (VP) scenarios introduced during the DENT1060 course. You will have one (1) hour in-class under exam conditions to write and submit your virtual patient reflection. You will not be permitted to access the internet or any Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistance tools.

Assessment takes the form of an Objective Structured Clinical Examination. Students are assessed on their performance of several specified procedures which they have learned by completing the Simulation Peer Clinic session Learning Activities during the semester in the DENT1060 course.

Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number - e.g., 84.4% rounds down to 84%, and 84.5% rounds up to 85%. This applies to all grade cutoffs except for a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50%, and a pass cannot be achieved with 49.5%.

Additional learning resources information

At the commencement of Semester 1, students are required to purchase instrument kits and dental models for use in pre-clinical training activities. These instruments and models will be required for pre-clinical practical classes for Year 1 through to Year 4 of the BDSc(Hons) program. Maintenance of the instrument kits remains the responsibility of individual students and this includes the replacement of broken instruments and/or the purchase of additional plastic teeth for dental models when required.ᅠ

A series of sessions in the preclinical simulation laboratory will be delivered: safe dental practice, introduction to dental equipment and examination techniques, tooth morphology based practical sessions, contemporary techniques for dental records gathering, introduction to oral hygiene concepts and products. Peer Clinic and Academic English

Clinical activities/training sessions: students will be expected to apply their theoretical knowledge and practical skills learnt throughout the coaching and pre-clinic session into the clinical sessions, under the supervision of a dental practitioner. Further information will be clarified in the induction session. Clinical learning will be recorded in a log book throughout the semester. Attendance is compulsory
