The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate the student’s pre-clinical/peer clinic performance at the interim stage and provide formative feedback to support improvement before the final clinical competence assessment at the end of semester.

Course Coordinator in consultation with the pre-clinical/peer clinic supervisory team will complete a report based on student’s clinical performance during the assessment period and quality of critical self-reflections following each session.

See Submission Guidelines for all components that must be submitted for the interim clinical practice performance task to be assessed. Detailed assessment criteria and rubrics will be provided on Blackboard.

Two domains will be assessed to an expectations met (EM) or not met (ENM) standard and mapped to the Professional competency requirements for the accreditation body for this program - The Australian Dental Council (Professional Competencies of the newly Qualified Dentist)

The domains being assessed are:

1. Professionalism, Communication and Health Promotion

2. Clinical Treatment and Evaluation

To achieve a pass, the criteria are as follows:

All domains are weighted equally, and the student must achieve a pass in each domain, and an overall pass.

  • A pass in each domain will involve a student receiving 3 or fewer "expectations not met" (ENM) mark in Domain 1, and no more than 3 "expectation not met" (ENM) in Domains 2.
  • An overall pass for the report will involve a student receiving 6 or fewer "expectations not met" (ENM) mark across the 2 domains.

Please note:

  • Written feedback will be provided for any areas to improve as this is formative. Students must reflect on feedback and demonstrate improvement in the latter half of the semester.
  • Logbooks may be randomly audited by the Course Coordinator for authenticity and supervisor signatures.
  • Any significant clinical concerns related to safety will be escalated immediately via course coordinator pathways and documented and taken into consideration for the assessment outcomes.

This is a formative assessment to enable the student to receive feedback on their developing clinical competency.

Any significant clinical concerns pertaining to patient safety will be escalated via clinical communication pathways to the course coordinator and recorded on this report to be considered for the assessment outcome.

Task description

This assessment task takes the form of cavity preparation tasks using equipment/instrumentation and the Typodont model. Students will be assessed on the performance to demonstrate satisfactory performance of manual dexterity skills and handpiece handling. The practical assessment will be conducted in the laboratory setting under timed conditions during a designated class session. Students will be given time to set up for the practical assessment in the laboratory setting.

The assessment must be completed unassisted by supervisors; students have sixty(60) minutes to complete a single (1) preparation in their Typodont model, on the indicated tooth number (e.g. tooth 36) according to supplied specifications, while demonstrating a consistently high standard of laboratory PPE compliance, handpiece handling, and safe operations.

Students will have opportunities to practise cavity preparation techniques and will be able to receive feedback for practice from supervisors during the semester, and leading up to the assessment.

This assessment task is not eligible for a re-mark as it will be assessed by two examiners and post-marking moderation process will be applied.

Assessment security

Secure assessment: This assessment is designed to protect academic integrity and assess your understanding of course concepts. You must only use the approved materials and tools for this assessment task. Use of prohibited materials in this task may be investigated and treated as academic misconduct. See assessment instructions for more details.

Submission guidelines

After the 60 minutes allowed to complete the specified preparation, students will leave the venue while examiners evaluate the work presented. When marking is completed and models returned, students may seek individual feedback on their performance from examiners once they collect their Typodont model.
