Dental Practice II will allow students to consolidate their developing skills in intra-coronal restoration and enhance competence in history taking, diagnosis, care planning and management for dental patients with medical conditions. Students will develop an emerging understanding of the effects of common medical conditions on routine dental procedures. At the completion of this course, students will apply knowledge of head and neck anatomy, neurophysiology and pharmacology of local anaesthetic agents to deliver effective pain relief for restorative treatments.
This course follows on from DENT2060 and continues using simulated learning environments including pre-clinical laboratories to provide students with the opportunity to attain competency in the clinical skills required to provide preventive dental care and simple dental restorations. Students will also develop their clinical skills in a clinical environment and apply knowledge of oral diseases to explain clinical observations and to solve clinical problems.
Each week, students will have 4-hrs of preclinical lab sessions and 3-hrs of clinical work-related sessions. This will be supplemented with 3-hours of workshop sessions.

Task description
The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate the student’s pre-clinical/peer clinic performance at the interim stage and provide formative feedback to support improvement before the final clinical competence assessment at the end of semester.
Course Coordinator in consultation with the pre-clinical/peer clinic supervisory team will complete a report based on student’s clinical performance during the assessment period and quality of critical self-reflections following each session.
See Submission Guidelines for all components that must be submitted for the interim clinical practice performance task to be assessed. Detailed assessment criteria and rubrics will be provided on Blackboard.
Two domains will be assessed to an expectations met (EM) or not met (ENM) standard and mapped to the Professional competency requirements for the accreditation body for this program - The Australian Dental Council (Professional Competencies of the newly Qualified Dentist)
The domains being assessed are:
1. Professionalism, Communication and Health Promotion
2. Clinical Treatment and Evaluation
To achieve a pass, the criteria are as follows:
All domains are weighted equally, and the student must achieve a pass in each domain, and an overall pass.
- A pass in each domain will involve a student receiving 3 or fewer "expectations not met" (ENM) mark in Domain 1, and no more than 3 "expectation not met" (ENM) in Domains 2.
- An overall pass for the report will involve a student receiving 6 or fewer "expectations not met" (ENM) mark across the 2 domains.
Please note:
- Written feedback will be provided for any areas to improve as this is formative. Students must reflect on feedback and demonstrate improvement in the latter half of the semester.
- Logbooks may be randomly audited by the Course Coordinator for authenticity and supervisor signatures.
- Any significant peer-clinical concerns related to safety will be escalated immediately via course coordinator pathways and documented and taken into consideration for the assessment outcomes.
There is no resubmission or resit available for this component. This is a formative assessment to enable the student to receive feedback on their developing clinical competency.
Any significant clinical concerns pertaining to patient safety will be escalated via clinical communication pathways to the course coordinator and recorded on this report to be considered for the assessment outcome.
Assessment security

Submission guidelines
Detailed marking rubric for this assessment is available on Blackboard. See Submission Guidelines for all components that must be submitted for the portfolio to be assessed for this clinical practice performance task.
The submitted portfolio will be reviewed and performance in each domain considered and used to complete a report of overall performance in each domain as per the criteria and standards. Students must complete all required components as outlined in Submission Guidelines.
To pass this must pass assessment, students must achieve a pass on the final report. This is a summative assessment on clinical performance in the later half of the semester. To achieve a pass, the criteria are as follows:
