Dental Practice II will allow students to consolidate their developing skills in intra-coronal restoration and enhance competence in history taking, diagnosis, care planning and management for dental patients with medical conditions. Students will develop an emerging understanding of the effects of common medical conditions on routine dental procedures. At the completion of this course, students will apply knowledge of head and neck anatomy, neurophysiology and pharmacology of local anaesthetic agents to deliver effective pain relief for restorative treatments.
This course follows on from DENT2060 and continues using simulated learning environments including pre-clinical laboratories to provide students with the opportunity to attain competency in the clinical skills required to provide preventive dental care and simple dental restorations. Students will also develop their clinical skills in a clinical environment and apply knowledge of oral diseases to explain clinical observations and to solve clinical problems.
Each week, students will have 3-hrs of preclinical lab sessions and 3-hrs of clinical work-related sessions. This will be supplemented with 1-hour lecture and 2-hours of clinical coaching sessions.

Aims and outcomes
The Dental Practice IIB course aims to consolidate students skills in intra-coronal restoration and develop an emerging understanding of the effects of common medical conditions on routine dental procedures.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Task description
Students must satisfactorily complete a two -surface intra-coronal preparation and restoration on specified posterior tooth/teeth in preclinic sim lab on a mannikin at the end of the specific module in Semester 2.
Student's hand skill development and feedback provided in each session leading up to this summative task should be used for self-improvement and reflection for optimum performance in summative practical assessment.

This is a MUST PASS assessment item, and one resit option is available. If the re-sit is failed, a supplementary is available based on student's performance in the course overall.

Task description
The 15-minute examination with two examiners will assess each student's knowledge, understanding and ability in general dentistry at a level appropriate for end of year 2 BDSc Hons.
This assessment task will assess at the appropriate level, each student's knowledge, understanding, and ability in general dentistry including basic patient assessment and examination, range of diagnostic tests, rationale for early clinical decision making, basic care planning and sequencing treatment, rationale for treatment of dental caries, non-carious tooth surface loss, early pre and peer clinical skills including choice of materials, patient management, ethics and professionalism.
All concepts learnt in preclinic and peer clinical sessions and seminars in Semester 2 mapped to course learning outcomes, will be examined.
Students can expect to answer questions, draw and explain diagrams / models, perform short practical tasks and demonstrate concepts by role-playing. All aspects explored in Semester 2 may be examined.

Task description
Students are required to complete peer-clinic session reflections.
The reflection should follow SEAL (Situation, Effect, Action, Learning) framework.
SEAL (Situation, Effect, Action, Learning) requires 1-2 lines for each section as follows:
1. Situation: Describe what happened during your clinical/ observation session.
2. Effect: List briefly the challenges faced and the impact they made on you/ student clinician you were observing.
3. Action: Explain briefly the action taken or strategy employed to deal with the challenge, and the rationale for taking the action.
4. Learning: Explain what was learnt from this case or patient/ peer interaction.

Submission guidelines
Hard copy of portfolios should be submitted to the course coordinator for assessment and supervisor's feedback.

The maximum extension allowed is 2 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Additional course grading information
Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number - e.g., 84.4% rounds down to 84%, and 84.5% rounds up to 85%. This applies to all grade cutoffs except for a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50%, and a pass cannot be achieved by rounding up from 49.5%.
