This course provides a foundation in dental research, methods, and practice. It includes competency-building activities that enhance student learning through the review of published research, tutorials, and quizzes/assignments.
DENT3021 Research Informed Practice I is the first course of the Evidence-based Practice Stream within the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) program.
The course equips students to evaluate research and apply an evidence-based approach to clinical practice. Students will be introduced to the research process from a researcher's perspective and begin developing the skills and knowledge key to successful research.

Aims and outcomes
The course aims to enable you to:
- Apply the fundamentals of the research process to a clinical context and use an evidence-based approach to your clinical practice.
- Integrate clinical knowledge and research skills to read and evaluate dental research literature.
- Synthesise and communicate the evidence underpinning your clinical practice to various audiences.

Task description
In this assessment, you will develop research skills that are essential for applying an evidence-based approach to your clinical practice. You will also improve your formal academic research writing skills, including structuring your work effectively, ensuring logical progression and flow, organizing paragraphs, and using appropriate citation styles. These skills will be crucial as you prepare for your final year research project. The assessment will involve finding relevant literature related to an oral health research question and then methodically analyzing this literature to assess the information and evidence used to support the research.

Additional course grading information
Students must reasonably attempt all assessment tasks in order to pass the course.
Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number - e.g., 84.4% rounds down to 84%, and 84.5% rounds up to 85%. This applies to all grade cutoffs except for a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50%, and a pass cannot be achieved by rounding up from 49.5%.
