Students will consolidate skills and attain competence in general oral examination, recognition and diagnosis of common dental and oral conditions, comprehensive oral care planning for simple general dental needs. Students will provide preventive oral health care, periodontal care, intra-coronal restorations and dental analgesia. Each week students will undertake 6 hours of direct patient care and 3 hours of competency building activities such as lectures, seminars, case-based discussions and workshops. Task description

The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate the student’s clinical performance at the interim stage and provide formative feedback to support improvement before the final clinical competence assessment at the end of semester.

Course Coordinator in consultation with the MNHHS Oral Health Centre clinical supervisory team will complete a report based on student’s clinical performance during the assessment period and quality of critical self-reflections following each clinical session.

See Submission Guidelines for all components that must be submitted for the interim clinical practice performance task to be assessed. Detailed assessment criteria and rubrics will be provided on Blackboard.

Four domains will be assessed to an expectations met (EM) or not met (ENM) standard and mapped to the Professional competency requirements for the accreditation body for this program - The Australian Dental Council (Professional Competencies of the newly Qualified Dentist)

The domains being assessed are:

1. Professionalism, Communication and Health Promotion

2. Scientific knowledge and Clinical Information Gathering

3. Critical Thinking, Diagnosis and Management Planning

4. Clinical Treatment and Evaluation

To achieve a pass, the criteria are as follows:

All domains are weighted equally, and the student must achieve a pass in each domain, and an overall pass.

  • A pass in each domain will involve a student receiving 2 or fewer "expectations not met" (ENM) mark in Domain 1, and no more than one "expectation not met" (ENM) in Domains 2-4.
  • An overall pass for the report will involve a student receiving 4 or fewer "expectations not met" (ENM) mark across the 4 domains.

In addition to this, there must be NO outstanding missing information within ISOH or the relevant patient management system. This includes missed treatment items, unsigned clinical records and incomplete OPG reviews. If this is not completed to a satisfactory standard, it will be deemed a fail grade for the assessment item. Please refer to the policy titled, "Process for Managing Incomplete Clinical Records by UQ Dentistry Students".

Please note:

  • Written feedback will be provided for any areas to improve as this is formative. Students must reflect on feedback and demonstrate improvement in the latter half of the semester.
  • ePAD records may be randomly audited by the Course Coordinator for authenticity and supervisor signatures.
  • Any significant clinical concerns related to patient safety will be escalated immediately via clinical communication pathways and documented and taken into consideration for the assessment outcomes.

There is no resubmission or resit available for this component. This is a formative assessment to enable the student to receive feedback on their developing clinical competency.

Any significant clinical concerns pertaining to patient safety will be escalated via clinical communication pathways to the course coordinator and recorded on this report to be considered for the assessment outcome.

Clinical Practice and Log of Clinical Experience

Clinical Work (Clinical Practice): Clinical skills training will be undertaken in the OHC clinics under the direct supervision of a qualified dentist. Attendance is compulsory, and will be monitored. Clinical experience should be recorded in a year 3 clinical experience electronic log book and signed off each session by the supervising dentist. This record is common to both clinical courses in year 3.

Students must complete a specified log of clinical experience for their clinical work as an operator. These are used both to provide feedback to students on their clinical progress, as well as to record and collate specific details of the volumes and types of treatments undertaken. For the various clinical disciplines, the case details are to be recorded in the designated portfolio for that discipline.
