This course builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding developed and consolidated during Dental Practice III A and III B through the provision of comprehensive care for adult patients with increasingly complex needs. While maintaining competencies previously achieved, students will acquire and consolidate new skills in assessment, recognition and diagnosis of dental and oral conditions, comprehensive oral care planning including referrals, preventive oral health care, periodontal care, intra-coronal restorations and dental analgesia for patients with moderately complex general dental needs. Each week students will undertake 6 hours of direct patient care and 6 hours of competency building activities such as lectures, case-based discussions and workshops. This course assumes approximately 3 hours of self-directed learning each week.

The course develops the skills and competence in medical and dental history taking, assessment, recognition, diagnosis and care planning as well as build up the foundation of the general dental practitioner working in a multi-disciplinary team. Topics in different dental specialties will be discussed to facilitate multi-disciplinary care of adults with moderately complex needs in dentistry. To support their understanding and clinical skills students will further explore aspects of human and oral diseases, diagnoses and comprehensive dental treatment of routine and complex medically compromised patients. Students are expected to identify levels of complexity in the treatment of medically compromised patients and provide an appropriate referral. At the end of the course, students will be able to refine diagnoses, minimise potential risks in treatment of complex patients and provide detailed referrals. Pre-clinical dental training in contemporary operative dentistry will also take place to develop skills in aesthetic restorations. Each week students will undertake approximately 6 hours of clinical patient care including provision of care, dental assisting and observations, and approximately 6 hours of competency building activities such as lectures, seminars, problem-based learning, workshops, self-directed activities and pre-clinical simulation exercises. This course assumes approximately 3 hours of self-directed learning each week.ᅠ

Task description

The purpose of this assessment is to evaluate the student’s clinical performance at the mid-semester stage and provide formative feedback to support improvement before the final clinical competence assessment in this course.

Course Coordinator in consultation with the MNHHS Oral Health Centre clinical supervisory team will complete a report based on student’s clinical performance during the assessment period and quality of critical self-reflections following each clinical session. This will be completed for all three sub components including General Dental Practice Clinical Portfolio (Digital ePAD); Exodontia Competency and Case Identification task.

See Submission Guidelines for all components that must be submitted for the interim clinical practice performance portfolio (ePAD).

Detailed assessment criteria and rubrics will be provided on Blackboard.

Four domains will be assessed to an expectations met (EM) or not met (ENM) standard and mapped to the Professional competency requirements for the accreditation body for this program - The Australian Dental Council (Professional Competencies of the newly Qualified Dentist)

The domains being assessed are:

1. Professionalism, Communication and Health Promotion

2. Scientific knowledge and Clinical Information Gathering

3. Critical Thinking, Diagnosis and Management Planning

4. Clinical Treatment and Evaluation

To achieve a pass, the criteria are as follows:

All domains are weighted equally, and the student must achieve a pass in each domain, and an overall pass.

  • A pass in each domain will involve a student receiving 2 or fewer "expectations not met" (ENM) mark in Domain 1, and no more than one "expectation not met" (ENM) in Domains 2-4.
  • An overall pass for the report will involve a student receiving 4 or fewer "expectations not met" (ENM) mark across the 4 domains.

Please note:

  • Written feedback will be provided for any areas to improve as this is formative. Students must reflect on feedback and demonstrate improvement in the latter half of the semester.
  • ePAD records may be randomly audited by the Course Coordinator for authenticity and supervisor sign offs.
  • Any significant clinical concerns related to patient safety will be escalated immediately via clinical communication pathways and documented and taken into consideration for the assessment outcomes.

There is no resubmission or resit available for this component. This is a formative assessment to enable the student to receive feedback on their developing clinical competency.

Any clinical concerns pertaining to patient safety will be escalated via clinical communication pathways to the course coordinator and recorded on this report.

Submission guidelines

The portfolio in DENT4060 has three sub components including General Dental Practice Clinical Portfolio (Digital ePAD); Exodontia Competency and Case Identification task.

All subcomponents in the submitted portfolio must be COMPLETE in following respects before it can be assessed as part of this assessment task. Any incomplete or missing information will result in a fail grade.

  1. Students must complete the ePAD portfolio for all clinical, observational and assisting sessions upto the due date for this submission. The electronic logbook (ePAD) must be completed with regards to patient information (de-identified) and treatment codes/activities twice daily (AM and PM sessions), and must all be signed off by a clinical supervisor. If no feedback (written or verbal) is provided by the supervisor during a session, the student must proactively seek feedback immediately after the session. The student should then record the feedback and obtain the supervisor’s sign-off to confirm the discussion.
  2. A weekly structured reflection must be written around a specific case undertaken during the week, particularly where the supervisor/s have provided constructive feedback, or a grade of expectations not met was received. This is also submitted via ePad.
  3. Treatment summary sheets ("tallies") must be submitted for all treatment items at the mid-semester timepoint on ePad.
  4. These following reports (upto the submission due date) must be signed off as complete by the Principal Dentist for the following. Please attach the ISOH treatment Report and a Missing Treatment Item Report generated (upto due date) for the student to the ePAD submisison:
  5. Clinical Records
  6. Missing Treatment Items and
  7. CCC: Client identified, informed consent, site identified, final team check.
  8. At least three case learning summaries must be submitted via ePad for this report completed upto the submission due date for this assessment task.

Students are required to take a minimum of 15 OPG for the whole year (DENT4060-DENT4061)ᅠas well as interpretation of these OPGs. Students are encouraged to complete as many of these in Semester 1 placements as possible. In the instance that a student does not achieve these minimum requirements, the standard of the cases completed by the student will be reviewed by the course coordinator and the minimum requirement may be waived. This will be replaced with an appropriate assessment task for students who do not achieve adequate OPG numbers. This is at the discretion of the Course Coordinator.

Deferral or extension

You may be able to apply for an extension.

The maximum extension allowed is 2 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.

Log of Clinical Experience

Students must complete a specified log of clinical experience for their clinical work as an operator. These are used both to provide formative feedback to students on their clinical progress, as well as to record and collate specific details of the volumes and types of treatments undertaken. For the various clinical disciplines, the case details are to be recorded in the designated format for that discipline. For General Practice including preventative and simple restorative procedures - a specific section has been allocated in the clinic record book.
