This course builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding developed and consolidated during Dental Practice III A and III B through the provision of comprehensive care for adult patients with increasingly complex needs. While maintaining competencies previously achieved, students will acquire and consolidate new skills in assessment, recognition and diagnosis of dental and oral conditions, comprehensive oral care planning including referrals, preventive oral health care, periodontal care, intra-coronal restorations and dental analgesia for patients with moderately complex general dental needs. Each week students will undertake 6 hours of direct patient care and 6 hours of competency building activities such as lectures, case-based discussions and workshops. This course assumes approximately 3 hours of self-directed learning each week.
The course develops the skills and competence in medical and dental history taking, assessment, recognition, diagnosis and care planning as well as build up the foundation of the general dental practitioner working in a multi-disciplinary team. Topics in different dental specialties will be discussed to facilitate multi-disciplinary care of adults with moderately complex needs in dentistry. To support their understanding and clinical skills students will further explore aspects of human and oral diseases, diagnoses and comprehensive dental treatment of routine and complex medically compromised patients. Students are expected to identify levels of complexity in the treatment of medically compromised patients and provide an appropriate referral. At the end of the course, students will be able to refine diagnoses, minimise potential risks in treatment of complex patients and provide detailed referrals. Pre-clinical dental training in contemporary operative dentistry will also take place to develop skills in aesthetic restorations. Each week students will undertake approximately 6 hours of clinical patient care including provision of care, dental assisting and observations, and approximately 6 hours of competency building activities such as lectures, seminars, problem-based learning, workshops, self-directed activities and pre-clinical simulation exercises. This course assumes approximately 3 hours of self-directed learning each week.ᅠ

*ᅠ In the instance that a student does not achieve these minimum requirements, the standard of the cases completed by the student will be reviewed by the course coordinator and the minimum requirement may be waived. This will be replaced with an appropriate assessment task for students who do not achieve adequate OPG numbers. This is at the discretion of the Course Coordinator.
Overall mark will be rounded to the nearest whole number in computing score. For example, 74.50 and above will be rounded up to 75 and 74.49 will be rounded down to 74.

Log of Clinical Experience Students must complete a specified log of clinical experience for their clinical work as an operator. These are used both to provide formative feedback to students on their clinical progress, as well as to record and collate specific details of the volumes and types of treatments undertaken. For the various clinical disciplines, the case details are to be recorded in the designated format for that discipline. For General Practice including preventative and simple restorative procedures - a specific section has been allocated in the clinic record book. Learning outcomes: L01, L02, L03, L04, L05, L06, L07, L08, L09, L10, L11, L12 |
Clinical Hours |
Clinical practice Clinical skills training will be undertaken in the OHC clinics and simulation laboratories under the direct supervision of a qualified dentist. Attendance is compulsory, and will be monitored. Clinical experience should be recorded in a year 4 clinical experience record book and signed off each session by the supervising dentist. This record is common to both clinical courses in year 4 and should be held by the student until end of semester when it will be submitted.
