This course builds on the knowledge, skills and understanding developed during Dental Practice III A, III B and IV A through the provision of comprehensive oral care for adult patients with increasingly complex needs.
While maintaining competencies previously achieved students will acquire and consolidate new skills in assessment, recognition and diagnosis of a broad range of dental and oral conditions, comprehensive oral care planning including referrals, preventive oral health care, periodontal care, intra-coronal restorations, endodontics and dental analgesia for patients with moderately complex general dental needs. Fixed and removable prostheses may also be provided within a comprehensive course of care.
Each week students will undertake 6 hours of direct patient care and 3 hours of competency building activities such as lectures, case-based discussions and workshops. This course assumes approximately 3 hours of self-directed learning each week.

Aims and outcomes

  • To build on the knowledge, skills and understanding gained in the third year and the first semester of the fourth year of the BDSc(Hons) program through the provision of comprehensive oral care for adult patients with moderately complex general dental needs.
  • To acquire and consolidate new skills in assessment, recognition and diagnosis of a broad range of dental and oral conditions (including Dento-maxillofacial Radiology).
  • To acquire and consolidate new skills in comprehensive oral care planning including referrals, preventive oral health care, periodontal care, intra-coronal restorations,ᅠendodontics and dental analgesia and extractions for patients with moderately complex general dental needs.

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Demonstrate comprehension and application of the scientific basis of dentistry to clinical dental practice.

LO2.

Efficiently conduct patient histories, comprehensive or limited oral examinations and accurately recognize and diagnose a broad range conditions of the oral cavity and proximate structures.

Continue to develop clinical reasoning and clinical judgement skills to facilitate comprehensive oral care planning, whilst accounting for individual patient's expectations and needs.

LO4.

Design and implement comprehensive oral care plans including referrals to manage individuals diagnosed with a broad range conditions of the oral cavity and proximate structures.

LO5.

Design and implement preventive care programs to improve and maintain the oral health and to minimise risk of future disease in individuals diagnosed with dental caries, non-carious tooth surface loss and/or periodontal disease.

LO6.

Apply the principles of sterilisation, disinfection and prevention of cross-infection to maintain a safe working environment during patient-centred care.

LO7.

Apply principles of minimum intervention on cavity preparations for intra-coronal restorations, the management of carious and non-carious disease and selection/handling of dental materials for a range of procedures.

LO8.

Debride teeth efficiently and effectively for patients with moderate-severe periodontal disease.

LO9.

Reflect critically on their experiential learning and be able to self assess accurately when reviewing pre-clinical and clinical performance with supervisors.

LO10.

Demonstrate effective, accurate and responsible verbal and written communication, including electronic patient records, with patients, carers, clinical supervisors staff and be willing to seek advice on patient referral when appropriate.

The Extraoral Licensing exam will be held according to the following format. 

Duration: 40 minutes for 40 questions, 1 minute per question. Pass mark is 60%.

Task description

Students must present a new case that requires multidisciplinary care. The marking rubric will be made available on the Blackboard course site.

This assessment includes two parts:

  1. A Power Point Presentation 
  2. A 10-minute video recording presenting the case

 This is a MUST PASS assessment item. The pass mark is 50%. If a 50% pass mark is not achieved, one resubmission of a new case will be allowed.

Task description

Tittle: Clinical Portfolio (Digital ePAD)

Task Description:

  • Assessment of the clinical practice performance will be by the Course Coordinator, in discussion with the clinical supervisory team (MNHHS Oral Health Centre clinics).
  • This is based on student's performance and the quality of the critical self-reflections following each session, during the assessment period.
  • The assessment of Clinical Practice Performance is composed of a Clinical Portfolio.
  • Each component MUST be approved (PASS) in order to PASS the Clinical Practice Performance.
  • Detailed description for this assessment including each component can be found in attached document ("DENT4061 Clinical Portfolio Task Description & Marking Criteria").
  • In accordance with PPL Assessment Procedure Section 3 Part J, supplementary assessment will not be available for Clinical practice performance (portfolio) as professional competencies are developed over a 16 week practicum. There is no resubmission or resit option available for this assessment.
  • Submission: A reflection must be submitted on the ePAD on a weekly basis. A Mid-Semester Review of the portfolio with 3 case summaries will also be submitted to the Course Coordinator at the end of week 9 and end of week 16 via the ePAD platform. Mid semester feedback will be provided via ePAD so that students can use this to improve their performance in the latter half of the semester.


In addition, students are required to take a minimum of 15 OPG for the whole year (DENT4060-DENT4061) as well as interpretation of these OPGs.

Hurdle requirements

Students must complete all required components of the MyProgress final report (ePAD) as outlined above. To pass this must pass assessment, students must achieve a pass on the final report. This is a summative assessment on clinical performance in the later half of the semester. Mid semester feedback should be used by the student to improve their clinical performance in the latter half of the semester. To achieve a pass, the criteria are as follows: All domains are weighted equally, and the student must achieve a pass in each domain, and an overall pass. - A pass in each domain will involve a student receiving 2 or less "expectations not met" (ENM) mark in Domain 1, and 1 or less "expectation not met" (ENM) in Domains 2-4. - An overall pass for the report will involve a student receiving 4 or less "expectations not met" (ENM) mark across the 4 domains.

Submission guidelines

The submitted portfolio must be COMPLETE in all the following respects:

  • Students must complete the ePAD portfolio for all clinical, observational and assisting sessions.
  • When completing the record, students should complete the details in the form for patient case notes and treatment type including supervisor performance assessment and feedback.
  • If supervisors have not provided written feedback, but have provided verbal feedback, students should record this feedback in the ePAD and contact the supervisor to sign off on the statements. If there was no feedback either written or verbal provided, students must actively seek advice after the session and record as mentioned for verbal comments, followed by a sign off by the supervisor.
  • Students must endeavour to improve professional practice, continuously.
  • Students must ensure each daily sheet is signed off by their clinical supervisor at the end of each session (am/pm).
  • Students must write and submit a short weekly reflection on their clinical performance following the SEAL (Situation, Effect, Action, Learning) template provided. 
  • Student must complete and submit a ISOH treatment Report and a Missing Treatment Item Report at the mid-semester and end of semester portfolio review stage. This is uploaded into the ePAD.
  • There must be NO outstanding missing information within ISOH or the relevant patient management system being used.
  • ePAD portfolios can be audited randomly at anytime by the course coordinator to verify authenticity of assessment and signatures of supervisor.
  • ePAD portfolios are not to be misused; this includes but is not limited to adjusting comments or scores. The portfolio record forms a part of the summative clinical performance assessment and are the property of the UQ School of Dentistry. Such actions would constitute attempting to cheat on an assessment task. If it is believed that a student has interfered in any way with a logbook, disciplinary action for academic misconduct action will be taken.
  • Students must have all components of the portfolio completed and signed off by supervisors.
  • This is a MUST PASS assessment item.
  • If any of the above is not completed to a satisfactory standard, it will be deemed a fail grade for this assessment item.

Additional course grading information

Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number - e.g., 84.4% rounds down to 84%, and 84.5% rounds up to 85%. This applies to all grade cutoffs except for a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50%, and a pass cannot be achieved by rounding up from 49.5%.


Students must attempt all assessment tasks and attend rostered clinical sessions.

Additional assessment information

The School of Dentistry supports the concept of re-submission or re-sitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. The pre-clinical weighted assessment showing developing professional competencyᅠover the semester, will be allowed to have a resit. The maximum mark a student can achieve after a re-sit will be a pass mark for that assessment. ᅠ

The clinical practice performance portfolio assessment is not available for resitᅠor resubmission. A supplementary assessment is not available for this item as this assesses developing professional competencies over a 16ᅠweek practicum.ᅠ

Log of Clinical experience

Students must complete a specified log of clinical experience for their clinical work as an operator. These are used both to provide formative feedback to students on their clinical progress, as well as to record and collate specific details of the volumes and types of treatments undertaken. For the various clinical disciplines, the case details are to be recorded in the designated portfolio for that discipline.

Clinical Practice

Clinical practice (Clinics): Clinical skills training will be undertaken in the OHC clinics and simulation laboratories under the direct supervision of a qualified dentist. Attendance is compulsory and will be monitored. Clinical experience should be recorded in a year 4 clinical experience portfolio and signed off each session by the supervising dentist. This record is common to both clinical courses in year 4 and should be held by the student until end of semester when it will be submitted.

Simulation laboratory activities (Practical and Case Discussions): A series of sessions in the pre-clinical simulation laboratory will be scheduled through the semester.
