This course builds on student experience in general dental practice and the specialist dental disciplines.
Students will continue to develop their skills and competence in history taking, assessment, recognition, diagnosis, treatment planning and aspects of management for conditions managed within the dental specialties including prosthodontics, endodontics, dentomaxillofacial radiology, oral medicine, oral surgery and orthodontics.
Students will develop their clinical skills and competence in multi-disciplinary care of adults with moderately complex needs and the care of children, and gain some experience with special needs patients.
To support their understanding and clinical skills students will further explore aspects of human and oral diseases, dental pharmacology and therapeutics, disability and medical compromise.
Each week students will undertake approximately 9 hours of clinical patient care including provision of care, dental assisting and observations and 9 hours of competency building activities such as lectures, seminars, problem-based learning, workshops, self-directed activities and pre-clinical simulation exercises. This course assumes approximately 3 hours of self-directed learning each week.

Task description
The competency exam will be held in the scheduled preclinic session for the identified week.
This is a must-pass preclinical assessment for a previously assessed tooth (endodontic plastic molar 16). Students are required to demonstrate maintained competency for endodontic treatment in a standardised molar under examination conditions. The allocated tooth is identical to the one used in a previous course (DENT3071) and therefore draws upon assumed knowledge and skills. The marking rubric will be available on Blackboard.
A re-sit opportunity is available for students who do not achieve a passing standard on their first attempt.
- No supervised practice or revision sessions will be provided prior to this resit attempt.
- To pass the assessment following a re-sit, students must meet the minimum competency standard in all required components.
- A re-sit cannot be deferred.
Assessment security
Secure assessment: This assessment is designed to protect academic integrity and assess your understanding of course concepts. You must only use the approved materials and tools for this assessment task. Use of prohibited materials in this task may be investigated and treated as academic misconduct. See assessment instructions for more details.
Hurdle requirements
Students must obtain either a Satisfactory or Developing grade in the following domains: access cavity preparation, length determination, instrumentation and cone fit, obturation, and documentation (rubric can be found in Blackboard). Any category where there is an "Expectation Not Met" will require a resit during the Semester. Completion of this assessment satisfies the endodontic preclinical component in DENT4071 as well as the Oral Health Alliance agreement to receive clinical molar cases in Year 5. This is a pass/fail hurdle only: no course weighting is assigned.Submission guidelines

Task description
This group activity is designed to support the development of comprehensive treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs. It emphasises a deep understanding of both medical and social determinants of health, while fostering empathy and clinical reasoning.
Groups will present and justify their proposed treatment plan through an oral case presentation, supported by relevant materials. Students will engage in discussion and respond to questions to demonstrate depth of understanding and professional judgement.
This assessment evaluates students’ ability to synthesise clinical findings, apply relevant theoretical frameworks, and communicate well-reasoned and defensible treatment decisions within a collaborative clinical context.
Further details regarding case allocation, group organisation, presentation format, marking criteria and submission requirements will be provided on the course Blackboard site.
The presentation will be recorded and retained as per university policy. The recording will be stored in a secure manner and will only be accessed if required for the purposes of moderation of marking; provision of feedback to the student; and/or re-marking following a successful re-mark application.
Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Use of Generative AI tools is permitted in specific parts of this assessment task
This task has been designed to be challenging, authentic, and reflective of complex clinical decision-making. While the core synthesis of your patient's treatment plan, clinical reasoning, and oral defense must be the original work of the group, you may utilize generative AI tools as a preliminary aid. Specifically, AI may be used to brainstorm general medical/social determinants of health or to help structure and proofread the text on your presentation slides.
However, any AI-generated suggestions must be critically evaluated, verified against peer-reviewed dental literature, and properly referenced. The final treatment plan must reflect your group's independent professional judgement. If generative AI is used, you must include an acknowledgment section outlining which tools were used and how they contributed to your preparation. Unattributed or excessive reliance on AI that replaces student clinical reasoning will be treated as academic misconduct.
Assessment security
Open assessment: In this assessment you can use resources such as your notes, course materials, and other tools, including AI, while completing the task. The focus is not on memorising information, but on understanding, applying judgement, and demonstrating your own thinking.

Additional assessment information
The School of Dentistry permits the resitting of failed assessment items only under specific, defined circumstances. In this course, the Clinical Practice Performance Portfolio is strictly ineligible for a resit, resubmission, or supplementary assessment, as it evaluates the continuous development of professional competencies over a 16-week practicum. Conversely, the hurdle laboratory assessment components are eligible for a single resit attempt if failed. Following a successful resit the maximum result achievable for that component is capped at a pass mark. Students must attend the scheduled resit; no extensions or alternative dates will be granted, and failure to appear will result in the immediate forfeiture of the opportunity.
