This course builds on student experience in general dental practice and the specialist dental disciplines.
Students will continue to develop their skills and competence in history taking, assessment, recognition, diagnosis, treatment planning and aspects of management for conditions managed within the dental specialties including prosthodontics, endodontics, dentomaxillofacial radiology, oral medicine, oral surgery and orthodontics.
Students will develop their clinical skills and competence in multi-disciplinary care of adults with moderately complex needs and the care of children, and gain some experience with special needs patients.
To support their understanding and clinical skills students will further explore aspects of human and oral diseases, dental pharmacology and therapeutics, disability and medical compromise.
Each week students will undertake approximately 9 hours of clinical patient care including provision of care, dental assisting and observations and 9 hours of competency building activities such as lectures, seminars, problem-based learning, workshops, self-directed activities and pre-clinical simulation exercises. This course assumes approximately 3 hours of self-directed learning each week.

Task description

The aim of this activity is to encourage students to develop treatment plans tailored to patient’s needs with deep understanding, and empathy towards social and medical determinants of health that impacts on one’s life.

Important point to consider:

  • Groups and dates have been allocated based on the “year 4 timetable”.
  • A small group of 6 to 7 students is allocated a case with relevant information including photos and/or radiographs to present a case report. Refer to table below for more information about groups, cases and date of the presentation.
  • Information about the case will be available on the Blackboard 2 weeks in advance.
  • OPTIONAL: Look for guidance to develop a proper treatment plan. All groups can proceed through a series of group discussion sessions with a specialist in SND. This will help you to become confident in one area related to the clinical scenario allowing your group to field class questions. Groups to coordinate time with instructors.
  • Refer to the book Stefanac, S. J., & Nesbit, S. P. (2016). Diagnosis and Treatment Planning in Dentistry (3rd ed.). Mosby. https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-323-28730-2.00008-X. This is the course textbook and it is excellent. Other books to be considered is Little, J., Miller, C., & Rhodus, N. (2018). Little and Falace's Dental Management of the Medically Compromised Patient (9th ed.). Elsevier Health Sciences. Therapeutic guidelines : eTG complete. (2002). Therapeutic Guidelines Ltd.
  • Use the “Template Treatment Planning presentation” as a framework for the Power Point presentations.
  • Submit the Power Point presentation to Dr Claudia Lopez ( c.lopezsilva@uq.edu.au) and Dr Lydia See (l.see@uq.edu.au) by Thursday before the date of the presentation. The Power Point presentation should be the document all the students read before the pre-clinical session. The presentation will be uploaded on blackboard so all students can prepare for the care planning sessions.
  • Check some a good example of case presentations from a previous year under the folder “good presentations”. Don’t forget to include references.
  • Refer to the marking rubric. This task contributes towards 25% of your final mark. Power point presentations and case discussions are marked together.
  • The oral presentation should be for 20 minutes total. Maximum 20 PPT slides

The oral presentation is about discussing the case and answering questions. The discussion after the oral presentation will be maximum 80 minutes per case. All students are encouraged to contribute to the discussion.

Review the following expectations to be able to do an excellent presentation

Integration of findings by the students

  • Material is well within the subject context, illustrating the basis behind the case and all relevant material.
  • A well balanced presentation including relevant case notes which are well linked to form a cohesive account.
  • The main issues are identified and key points are concisely presented.

Structure of the presentation

  • Section is well planned to show the structure of the presentation.
  • Clear beginning, middle and end.
  • The topic material flows well, with explanations following in logical order.
  • The amount of material prepared is spot on for the time allocated to the talk.

Academic input

  • Aims are clear and links to theory are evident.
  • Content illustrates a high level of learning.
  • Good explanations.
  • Student able to see all important aspects of the case.

Due date

25/10/2024

Task description

Assessment of the clinical practice performance will be by the Course Coordinator, in discussion with the clinical supervisory team (MNHHS Oral Health Centre and external Qld Health clinics). This is based on student's performance and the quality of the critical self-reflections following each session, during the assessment period.

The assessment of Clinical Practice Performance is composed of the following components:

  1. Daily sign off form completed for each clinical session and a weekly reflection action plan
  2. Mid-Semester Portfolio Review and 3 Case Learning Summaries
  3. End-Semester Portfolio Review and 3 Case Learning Summaries

Each component MUST be approved (PASS) in order to PASS the Clinical Practice Performance. The submitted portfolio must be COMPLETE in all the following respects:

  • Students must complete the ePAD portfolio for all clinical, observational and assisting sessions.
  • When completing the record, students should complete the details in the form for patient case notes and treatment type including supervisor performance assessment and feedback.
  • If supervisors have not provided written feedback, but have provided verbal feedback, students should record this feedback in the ePAD and contact the supervisor to sign off on the statements. If there was no feedback either written or verbal provided, students must actively seek advice after the session and record as mentioned for verbal comments, followed by a sign off by the supervisor.
  • Students must endeavour to improve professional practice, continuously.
  • Students must ensure each daily sheet is signed off by their clinical supervisor at the end of each session (am/pm).
  • Students must write and submit a short weekly reflection on their clinical performance following the SEAL (Situation, Effect, Action, Learning) template provided.
  • Student must complete and submit a ISOH treatment Report and a Missing Treatment Item Report at the mid-semester and end of semester portfolio review stage. This is uploaded into the ePAD.
  • There must be NO outstanding missing information within ISOH or the relevant patient management system being used.
  • ePAD portfolios can be audited randomly at anytime by the course coordinator to verify authenticity of assessment and signatures of supervisor.
  • ePAD portfolios are not to be misused; this includes but is not limited to adjusting comments or scores. The portfolio record forms a part of the summative clinical performance assessment and are the property of the UQ School of Dentistry. Such actions would constitute attempting to cheat on an assessment task. If it is believed that a student has interfered in any way with a logbook, disciplinary action for academic misconduct action will be taken.
  • Students must have all components of the portfolio completed and signed off by supervisors.
  • This is a MUST PASS assessment item.
  • If any of the above is not completed to a satisfactory standard, it will be deemed a fail grade for this assessment item.

Criteria & Marking:

* In accordance with PPL Assessment Procedure Section 3 Part J, supplementary assessment will NOT be available for Clinical Practice Performance (portfolio) as professional competencies are developed over a 16-week practicum. There is no resubmission or resit option available for this assessment.

The practical clinical portfolio will be reviewed and performance in each domain considered and used to complete a report of overall performance in each domain. Assessment of the portfolio will occur at two time points during semester, mid-semester and at the end of the semes
