This course provides students with experiential learning in research through the conduct of a chosen research project and occasional workshops.
DENT5023 is the critical research component within the BDSc(Hons) program and offers an opportunity to engage with oral health research, under the support of your supervisor(s). You will undertake a project on a specific topic of dentistry, or a discipline related to dentistry. The research project is completed in a small team of 3 that leads to various outputs, including a publishable research report and oral presentation. This process aims to strengthen your abilities in collaborative research and effective communication of your research findings to scientific audiences. While your supervisor(s) and the course coordinator (CC) will offer guidance and support throughout the process of designing, implementing, and evaluating your project, the responsibility lies with you to be organised and self-directed in managing your research project.

Throughout the academic year, one day per week should be allocated for DENT5023. The specific day allocated will vary depending on your clinical placements. Given the various levels of activity throughout the year, flexibility in managing your time and allocating it to your research projects is encouraged.
DO NOT accept regular additional clinical time if offered during your clinical placements without Course Coordinator approval.
Aims and outcomes
The aim of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to experience the full scope of conducting a research project and apply the fundamentals of the research process to develop a targeted project that enhances the health outcomes of a specific population.ᅠ

Task description
You are required to develop an Analytical plan for your planned project based on the research proposal developed in DENT4021. This Analytical plan must be approved by the supervisor(s). The final Analytical plan can be submitted at any time up to the due date. The course coordinator and/or assessor of the proposal reserves the right not to approve the project proposal.
If it is a group project, a common research analytical plan must be submitted.
If ethical approval is required, then an application or an ethical approval must be submitted. Do not commence your research prior to obtaining ethics approval. This is a process separate from the course. Details of this process have been provided during your DENT4021 course.
This assessment task is NOT A MUST PASS assessment task.
Submission guidelines
A completed cover sheet MUST be included as the first page of your submission. Your proposal must be submitted on Blackboard as ONE file (the cover sheet is the first page of the submission). All students must submit the proposal even if this is a group submission.
Your assignment must be submitted through Blackboard via Turnitin. Please ensure that you submit your proposal to the draft submission site and review your Turnitin originality report. Draft submissions will not receive feedback from the course coordinator and are to review the Turnitin report for originality only.
By submitting your assignment, you are certifying that it is your original work and has not been submitted previously for assessment in any other course at the university. Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.

Task description
Write a publishable report that describes the implementation and evaluation of your project.
If it is a group project, a common research report must be submitted.
The report must be formatted as per the template provided in Blackboard.
This assessment task is NOT A MUST PASS requirement for the course.

Task description
This assessment task is an individual oral presentation of the research findings at the Herston campus.
Instructions for the oral presentation will be available on the Blackboard course site.
The oral presentation is an individual, independent assessment item. Members of a research group MUST work independently to prepare this presentation.
This Individual Oral Presentation will be recorded and retained as per university policy. The recording will be stored in a secure manner and will only be accessed if required for the purposes of moderation of marking; provision of feedback to the student; and/or re-marking following a successful re-mark application.
This is a MUST PASS assessment item (achieve a minimum of 50% to pass).
If a student does not achieve a minimum of 50% but achieves a mark of at least 30%, one resit exam will be made available for this item. After resitting, the maximum result is a pass mark (50%).
The resit will be organised within the workshop week or soon thereafter.

Additional course grading information
Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number ie. 84.4% will round down to 84% and 84.5% will round up to 85%. This will apply to all grade cutoffs apart from a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50% and a pass cannot be achieved with 49.5%.

Overview of course assessment:
Your final mark and grade for DENT5023 will be calculated from your results on three componentsᅠof summative assessment:
- Assessment 1. Research analytical plan (20% weighting)
- Assessment ᅠ2. Research project report (40% weighting)
- Assessment ᅠ3. Oral presentation (40% weighting)
To obtain a grade of 4 or higher, and pass this course, you MUST achieve an overall weighted mark of at least 50% or greater, you MUST also achieve a mark of at least 50% in the oral presentation assessment item.
For the oral presentation assessment item, there is one resit option available if a student does not achieve a minimum mark of 50% but achieves at least a mark of 30%. For the resit, the maximum mark possible is 50%. The resit will be organised within or soon after the workshop week.
Re-submission of assessment:
The School of Dentistry permits the resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, the oral presentation assessment component is eligible for consideration for the resubmission/resit option under the following conditions: Achieve a minimum of 30%. After resubmission or resitting, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resubmission/resit for an assessment item and do not attend on/submit by the scheduled date will not be permitted to reschedule the assessment/granted an extension to the due date.ᅠ
Due to the nature of this course, the resubmission of assessment items (research analytical planᅠand research project report) for the course is NOT available.
