This course focuses on clinically oriented sciences, providing students with an engaging learning experience through competency-building activities, including lectures, workshops, tutorials, and case-based discussions. It emphasises the application of basic and clinical science knowledge, fostering an understanding of the scientific foundations of dental practice and oral health maintenance. Additionally, students will be introduced to common dental and oral diseases, broadening their awareness of conditions relevant to professional practice.

This course aims to give students detailed knowledge and understanding of the basic sciences, including anatomy, biology, physics, chemistry, microbiology, and biochemistry of the head and neck, as applied to clinical dental practice. ᅠ

Aims and outcomes

This course provides comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the basic sciences, including anatomy, biology, embryology, morphology, histology, and biochemistry, focusing on areas relevant to dental practice. It also helps students develop key analytical and communication skills essential for professional practice, such as problem identification and resolution, information literacy, and academic writing.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Identify the major anatomical structures of the head and neck and relate these to their function.

LO2.

Identify the anatomy and histology of structures within and around the oral cavity, including their clinical appearance.

LO3.

Describe the anatomical structures of the orofacial region, as relate to the normal function of the mouth and associated structures.

LO4.

Label the histological and radiographic features of structures of the orofacial region.

LO5.

Understand the embryology and histology of tooth development and patterns of tooth eruption.

LO6.

Describe the anatomy of the permanent and primary dentition, using correct terminology.

LO7.

Differentiate between normal and abnormal features with respect to structures of the oro-facial region.

Hurdle requirements

To meet the hurdle requirements, students must achieve a minimum score of 50% on this exam. There is ONE resit option available if a student does not achieve a pass. Students must take into consideration the criteria and comments from the first attempt in resitting this assessment. Upon passing the resit examination, the student’s final mark is capped at a maximum of 50%, regardless of the score achieved.

Additional course grading information

Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number, i.e., 84.4% will round down to 84% and 84.5% will round up to 85%. This will apply to all grade cutoffs apart from a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50%, and a pass cannot be achieved with 49.5%.

The School of Dentistry permits the resubmission or resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances. In this course, the hurdle laboratory assessment component is eligible once for consideration for the resubmission/resit option under the following conditions: Achieve a minimum pass mark for that assessment item. After resubmission or resitting, the maximum result is a pass mark for that assessment component. Students who are granted a resit/resubmission for an assessment item and do not attend on/submit by the scheduled date will not be permitted to reschedule the assessment/be granted an extension to the due date.
