This course will introduce students to clinical dental practice and apply knowledge of dental science. An emphasis on evidence-based preventive dental practice will be introduced. Students will become comfortable with patient communication and procedures required to perform an examination in peer clinics. Simulation laboratories will enable the student to develop the required competencies prior to performing any procedures in the clinical setting.

Foundations of Clinical Dentistry I will enable students to develop knowledge and essential communication skills to facilitate person centred dental care, and comply with legal and professional requirements in safe health care delivery. Students will begin to reflect critically on their approach to dental practice, demonstrate an in depth knowledge of minimum intervention dentistry and conduct and record a thorough patient interview to collect relevant histories for preventive dental treatment.
