This course will build on the foundations of the comprehensive examination of the healthy mouth and introduce the student to the practice of minimal intervention dentistry. The course will use simulated learning environments including pre-clinical laboratories to provide students with the opportunity to attain competency in the clinical skills required to provide preventive dental care and simple dental restorations. Students will also develop their clinical skills in a clinical environment and will begin seeing patients in the second semester. The focus is the dental management of healthy adults.

Aims and outcomes

This course aims to develop a substantial and in-depth appreciation of the connection and application of science to clinical dental practice, and to develop the procedural skills required to begin clinical practice of evidence-based minimal intervention dentistry.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Demonstrate an applied knowledge of dental material properties and their application to direct restorative techniques.

Appropriately select and use instrumentation and dental materials for the practice of minimal intervention dentistry.

Apply the principles of clinical communication, behaviour management and oral health education to the clinical setting.

Task description

This is a series of three (3) pre-clinical assessments across a range of weeks within the semester.

In each pre-clinical assessment, you will be given an allocated time frame within your pre-clinic time to complete a specified number of of cavity preparations of a certain class (I-V) on the teeth identified to you.

Task description

In this task, you are required to construct a preclinical case portfolio of 1,400-1,600 words based on one of the Virtual Patients (VP) introduced throughout the course and related to a dental discipline of your choice.

This assessment will be submitted via a link on your course Blackboard site, via Turnitin.
