This course will build on the foundations of the comprehensive examination of the healthy mouth and introduce the student to the practice of minimal intervention dentistry. The course will use simulated learning environments including pre-clinical laboratories to provide students with the opportunity to attain competency in the clinical skills required to provide preventive dental care and simple dental restorations. Students will also develop their clinical skills in a clinical environment and will begin seeing patients in the summer semester. The focus is the dental management of healthy adults.

Aims and outcomes
This course aims to develop a substantial and in-depth appreciation of the connection and application of science to clinical dental practice, and to develop the procedural skills required to begin clinical practice of evidence-based minimal intervention dentistry.

Task description
In this pre-clinical assessment, you will be allocated time within your pre-clinic time under exam conditions, to complete a specified number of Class I and V cavity preparations and/or restorations on the teeth identified to you on the day of the assessment. You must bring all PPE, restorative instruments, pre-clinic lab coat and be dressed professionally in DMD navy scrubs.
The rubric used for the marking of this assessment will be available in Blackboard. Performance parameters, and assessment criteria and standards will be made available on the course Blackboard site prior to the assessment.
This assessment task is not eligible for a re-mark as it will be assessed by two or more examiners and post-marking moderation process will be applied.

Task description
This task will be an invigilated written examination held during week 7 Wednesday lecture time. It will consist of a number of short answer, long answer and multi-part questions related to the module on cariology, restorative dentistry and material science.

Task description
During your radiography module, you will need to demonstrate the safe competency in taking bitewings and periapical radiographs in the peer clinic setting using the Dexter manikin. This will be assessed during your rostered peer clinic sessions, where attendance is mandatory. This competency will include intraoral film holders, orientations, as well as the bisecting angle and paralleling techniques.

This assessment task is not eligible for a re-mark as the mode of assessment results in insufficient reviewable evidence of student achievement.

Task description
You will need to demonstrate the safe competency in the administration of LA during your peer clinic sessions. You will need to demonstrate sound infection control practices, the mantling and dismantling of a LA syringe, and the administration of an infiltration and an inferior alveolar nerve (with lingual) block using the correct anatomical knowledge and clinical procedure. You will also need to show palatal infiltration intraoral injection points, without needing to administer the local anaesthetic for this injection.

Task description
You will review a written case (15 minutes), then participate in a 15-minute oral examination with 2-3 examiners. The discussion will assess your understanding and application of restorative dentistry principles and material science, clinical diagnoses with reasoning, simple treatment planning, and application of evidence-based practice. Bring writing materials such as a pen and highlighter and please wear professional attire or DMD navy scrubs. No electronic devices or additional resources permitted. Additional course grading information
Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number i.e. 84.4% will round down to 84% and 84.5% will round up to 85%. This will apply to all grade cut-offs apart from a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50% and a pass cannot be achieved with 49.5%.

Additional assessment information
The School of Dentistry permits the resitting of failed assessment items in specific and defined circumstances.
In this course, the Restorative Practical: Class II, Intraoral Radiography Competency and Local Anaesthesia Competency assessment items are eligible once for consideration for the resit option. After resitting, the maximum result is 50% for the item that has be resit.
Students who are granted a resit for an assessment item and do not attend on the scheduled date will not be permitted to reschedule the assessment.
The date of the resit of the failed assessment item will be scheduled within 7 days of the original due date.
