This course builds on the foundations provided in general dental practice. Emphasis is on the delivery of oral care for healthy adults through preventive oral, simple periodontal, simple restorative care. Students will consolidate skills and attain competence in general oral examination, recognition and diagnosis of common dental and oral conditions, and care planning for simple general dental needs. Students will provide preventive oral health care, simple periodontal care, and radiographic interpretation for patients.

Aims and outcomes
This course builds on the foundations provided in general dental practice. Emphasis is on the delivery of oral care for healthy adults through preventive approaches, as well as the provision of straightforward periodontal and restorative care. Students will consolidate skills and attain competence in general oral examination, recognition and diagnosis of common dental and oral conditions, and care planning for straightforward general dental needs. Students will provide preventive oral health care, basic periodontal management, and radiographic interpretation for patients.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:
LO1.
Conduct a general oral examination and accurately recognise and diagnose common conditions of the periodontium and/or dental hard tissues, with minimal support.
LO2.
Apply clinical reasoning and clinical judgement to facilitate multidisciplinary dental treatment planning whilst accounting for individual patient's expectations and needs.
LO3.
Design and implement basic oral care plans and preventive care programs to manage individuals diagnosed with dental caries, non-carious tooth surface loss and/or initial periodontal disease.
LO4.
Demonstrate competency in selection and handling of dental materials for debridement and/or small intra-coronal restorations, applying the principles of minimum intervention.
LO5.
Demonstrate preclinical and/or clinical skills to debride teeth effectively for patients with varying degrees of periodontal disease (PSR ≤ 2).
LO6.
Employ critical reflection to experiential learning in both the pre-clinical and/or clinical environment, recognising personal limitations in terms of knowledge, understanding and clinical ability.
LO7.
Demonstrate clear and appropriate verbal communication with patients, carers, clinical staff and peers, and create accurate written communication including electronic patient records.
LO8.
Design practical strategies to enable ongoing self-reflexivity in the pre-clinical and/or clinical context with patients, carers, clinical staff and peers from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
LO9.
Recognise and quantify the relative roles of aetiological factors (medical, systemic and local) and thereby carry out a patient-specific risk assessment.
LO10.
Apply scientific principles of radiation and radiation safety to intra-oral radiographs.

Part 1:

In the second part of the exam students will provide skills to apply the correct material selection and usage of these materials for periodontal treatment in the simulated setting.

Task description
In this task, you are required to complete and submit the Clinical Portfolio. Students must complete the portfolio for all clinical, observational and assisting sessions. This is a Pass / Fail – Must Pass assessment based on student performance and quality of critical self-reflections within the required items.
To complete this task, students will:
· Complete the portfolio for all clinical and observational sessions.
· Ensure that logbooks are not misused; this includes but is not limited to, removing content, adjusting comments or scores, removing comments or adding comments that were not recorded as signed off on.
· After each clinical session, daily reports will be evaluated under the course associated with that session.
· At the completion of the semester, the final pass/fail grade will be calculated.
Hurdle requirements
To achieve a pass, the following conditions must be met starting from the week specified in the course: Daily clinical performance (CP): -A pass for the CP will involve a student receiving 1 “Developing” mark or less across all CP domains. -A developing for the CP will involve a student receiving 1 “Expectations Not Met” (ENM) or less across all CP domains. -A fail for the CP will involve a student receiving 2 or more “Expectations Not Met” (ENM) across all CP domains. Daily fitness to practice performance (FTPP): -A pass for the FTPP will involve receiving at least “Developing” in all the FTPP domains. -Any “Expectations Not Met” (ENM) in the FTPP domains will be referred to the Program Convenor for review under the Fitness to Practice Policy. Overall performance: -A pass for the clinical performance will involve 50% or more of the clinical sessions receiving an “Expectations Met” (EM) in the daily clinical performance. -A pass for fitness to practice performance will involve 50% or more of the clinical sessions receiving an “Expectations Met” (EM) in the daily fitness to practice performance.Submission guidelines

Daily sign-off:
-Complete the details in the form for session information and ADA item codes for treatment.
-Follow the School of Dentistry Guidelines for de-identifying patient codes and other identifiable information.
Sign-off procedure:
-You are to complete all the fields in the logbook form
-Submit to the Clinical Educator in eportfolio (This must happen at least half an hour before the end of your clinical session)
-The Clinical Educator will complete the rubric and feedback for the session
Feedback:
-Ensure that feedback is recorded in the logbook. The student must record this feedback and have the supervisor sign off on the statements. If no feedback was provided, the student must seek advice from the supervisor following the session, record the feedback, and have it signed off.
Late submissions:
Ensure each daily sheet is signed by their clinical supervisor at the end of each session (am/pm), including the practical check sheets. Submission completed more than 2 hours after the clinical session will be recorded as a non-submission.
Discipline sign-off:
-For each appointment in the following disciplines, the specific discipline-based sign-off sheet must also be submitted with the daily sign-off:
o Observation clinical sessions
o Radiography
o Restorative
o Periodontics
o Oral Surgery
o Endodontics

Weekly submissions:
-Write a weekly reflection and action plan on their clinical performance starting from the week specified in the course.
Mid and End of semester submission:
-Complete a treatment summary at the completion of your final clinical session at the end of the week prior to the mid-semester break and at the end of the semester.
*Note: Mid-semester submissions do not apply to Summer Semester courses.

Additional course grading information
Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number i.e. 84.4% will round down to 84% and 84.5% will round up to 85%. This will apply to all grade cutoffs apart from a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50% and a pass cannot be achieved with 49.5%.
