LO2.
Apply clinical reasoning and clinical judgement to facilitate multidisciplinary dental treatment planning whilst accounting for individual patient's expectations and needs.
LO3.
Design and implement basic oral care plans and preventive care programs to manage individuals diagnosed with dental caries, non-carious tooth surface loss and/or initial periodontal disease.
LO4.
Demonstrate competency in selection and handling of dental materials for debridement and/or small intra-coronal restorations, applying the principles of minimum intervention.
LO5.
Demonstrate preclinical and/or clinical skills to debride teeth effectively for patients with varying degrees of periodontal disease (PSR ≤ 2).
LO6.
Employ critical reflection to experiential learning in both the pre-clinical and/or clinical environment, recognising personal limitations in terms of knowledge, understanding and clinical ability.
LO7.
Demonstrate clear and appropriate verbal communication with patients, carers, clinical staff and peers, and create accurate written communication including electronic patient records.
LO8.
Design practical strategies to enable ongoing self-reflexivity in the pre-clinical and/or clinical context with patients, carers, clinical staff and peers from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
LO9.
Recognise and quantify the relative roles of aetiological factors (medical, systemic and local) and thereby carry out a patient-specific risk assessment.

Task description
For further information, including instructions for each part and specific due dates, please see the Blackboard Task Sheet for this assessment item. In this task, students are required to complete and submit a Clinical Practice Portfolio over the course of the semester, in order to document clinical performance within the patient clinic. Students must complete the portfolio for ALL clinical, dental assisting, fail to attend, and observational sessions.
To achieve a pass, the following conditions must be met in 3 components a, b and c:
a) Course-specific session sign-off forms
DUE: Submitted at the completion of each timetabled clinical session to the nominated Clinical Educator.
EXTENSIONS: You cannot apply for an extension for submission of the course-specific session sign-off forms.
LATE SUBMISSION: A late or non-submission will result in the session being recorded as a 0= Expectations Not Met (ENM).
TASK DESCRIPTION: These forms are essential for tracking performance and must be completed at the end of every AM or PM session where you see a patient. If no patient was seen, submit the Dental Assisting/FTA form.
Your session form is submitted to, and assessed by, your Clinical Educator and includes:
1. Clinical performance
2. Discipline-specific performance (only if you performed relevant procedures)
3. Fitness to practise (must pass)
Student marking expectations for each semester are calibrated to your year and stage in the DMD program. You are not being marked against the performance of a fully qualified dentist, but rather according to where you should be for your level of clinical training. Clinical educators will adjust their marking expectations accordingly as you progress throughout the program.
Session mark: Fitness to practise is a must pass item, assessed as EM or ENM only. If you receive an ENM in this category, you will receive an ENM as your session mark.
For example: Each session will be awarded a mark:
∙ 0 = Expectations Not Met (ENM)
∙ 2 = Developing (D)
∙ 3 = Expectations Met (EM)
∙ 4 = Above Expectations (AE)
Overall Semester Mark: The proportion of all course-specific session scores will be calculated at the end of the semester giving the ‘Overall Mark’ as a percentage.
At the completion of the semester the total session scores will be added together, divided by the total number of sessions. i.e .e.g. Six sessions with Expectations met and one with Expectations not met (3+3+3+3+3+3+0) = 18, 18 divided by (4 by 7) = 64.3% overall semester grade.
Minimum performance requirement: An “Overall Semester Mark” for the Semester will be awarded using the following values:
∙ Fail (F) = <63%
∙ Pass (P) = 63-100%
The pass requirements are based on the DMD year level and semester level, where the average overall score must be a minimum of: ≥ 2.5/4.0 (~62.5%). Students who receive three (3) or more ENM marks for the course-specific sign off sessions will be awarded an overall fail grade for the assessment item.
b) Mid-semester portfolio review and case tallies
DUE: Submit the two components to your Course Coordinator by 5pm Friday of the week prior to the mid-semester break via ePortfolio.
EXTENSIONS: An extension may be applied for this component of the assessment task.
LATE SUBMISSION: A late or non-submission will result in 100% penalty of the mark and therefore a fail for the assessment task.
TASK DESCRIPTION: This task helps to reflect on clinical progress, feedback integration, and future growth. The component includes two parts:
1. Case tallies for the semester AND a de-identified Patient Management System Treatment Report uploaded, and
2. A Mid-semester Reflection and Feedback Form.
c) End-of-semester portfolio review and case tallies
DUE: Submit the two components to your Course Coordinator by 5pm Friday of the last week of the Semester via ePortfolio.
1. Case tallies for the semester AND a de-identified Patient Management System Treatment Report uploaded, and
2. An End-of-semester Reflection and Feedback Form.
Minimum performance requirement: There are no minimum number of case requirements.
SUPPLEMENTARY ASSESSMENT: In accordance with PPL Assessment Procedure Section 3 Part J, supplementary assessment will NOT be available for clinical practice performance (portfolio) as professional competencies are developed through practicums delivered over an extended number of weeks throughout the Semester. There is NO resubmission or resit option available for this assessment.
Hurdle requirements
This is a MUST PASS assessment item.Submission guidelines
Please follow the instructions for submission as outlined for the daily, weekly, and end of semester submission instructions.
Deferral or extension
You may be able to apply for an extension.
The maximum extension allowed is 7 days. Extensions are given in multiples of 24 hours.
Late submission
You will receive a mark of 0 if this assessment is submitted late.

Additional course grading information
Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number i.e. 84.49% will round down to 84% and 84.5% will round up to 85%. This will apply to all grade cutoffs apart from a grade of 4. As such, the minimum pass mark is 50% and a pass cannot be achieved with a rounded up score, for example 49.9%.

Supplementary assessment is not available for some items in this course.
In accordance with PPL Assessment Procedure Section 3 Part J, supplementary assessment will NOT be available for clinical practice performance (portfolio) as professional competencies are developed over the semester's practicum.
