This course continues a student's exposure to specialist dental disciplines. Students will consolidate skills and competence in history taking, assessment, recognition, diagnosis, care planning and treatment for conditions managed within the relevant dental specialties. Students will provide preventive oral health care, dental analgesia, relevant treatment and follow-up as it applies to the specific dental speciality.
This course builds on student experience in general dental practice and the specialist dental disciplines. Students will develop their skills and competence in history taking, assessment, recognition, diagnosis, care planning and aspects of management for conditions commonly managed within the relevant dental specialties. Students will begin to acquire clinical skills and competence in multi-disciplinary care of patients with moderately complex needs through competency building activities such as lectures/seminars/clinical teaching, self-directed learning activities, pre-clinical simulation exercises and patient care as indicated.

Aims and outcomes
This course aims to develop skills in history taking, assessment, recognition, diagnosis, treatment planning and aspects of management within the relevant specialist branches of clinical dentistry.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Task description
- This is a fixed prosthodontics competency skills demonstration task.
- In this task, students will individually be required to complete a full coverage crown preparation for a designated tooth in a preclinic simulation setting.
- This is an in-person exam that will take place in the preclinic laboratory in the scheduled session.
- Students will be expected to present and conduct themselves professionally with their peers, preclinical educators and staff.
- Further information such as rubric and preparation criteria will be provided during the semester.
- The rubric will not be provided during the exam, and students should be aware of the criteria against which they are marked.
- Students will be awarded a final score and there will be no option for resit.
Submission guidelines
The student will hand in the model and tooth preparation at the end of the exam session.

Task description
- The Multiple Station Assessment Task (MSAT) will be conducted for the orthodontics module.
- The MSAT will have multiple working stations with a set duration between 2-10 mins each.
- During the MSAT, students will be rotated around all the stations and can expect to answer questions, draw and explain diagrams, perform practical tasks, demonstrate concepts by communicating their understanding orally and in written form.
- Students will be expected to present and conduct themselves professionally with their peers, preclinical educators and staff.
- The MSAT provides an assessment of the student’s knowledge and skills acquired from self-directed modules (UQ Extend), course material provided in Blackboard (if applicable), acquired practical skills from preclinic/laboratory sessions and applied concepts from clinical teaching sessions.
- Further instructions will be provided during the semester.

Task description
The final exam will be an in-person invigilated Inspera exam and students will complete this exam using their own laptop.
- A 60-minute "Must Pass" exam that will test the student's theoretical, applied and clinical knowledge, using a variety of question formats.
- May include multiple choice questions, short answer, short essay, extended essay questions and case-based scenarios for management of patients.
- The assessment will enable students to demonstrate the scope and depth of learning in areas relevant to the theoretical and applied practical knowledge in the course.
- The exam draws on all assessable material and content in the course, including lectures, research articles and preclinical content.
- This assessment task is to be completed in-person. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools will not be permitted. Any attempted use of AI may constitute student misconduct under the Student Code of Conduct.

Task description
In this task, you are required to complete and submit the Clinical Portfolio. Students must complete the portfolio for all clinical, observational and assisting sessions.
This is a Pass / Fail – Must Pass assessment based on student performance and quality of critical self-reflections within the required items.
To complete this task, students will:
· Complete the portfolio for all clinical and observational sessions.
· Ensure that logbooks are not misused; this includes but is not limited to, removing content, adjusting comments or scores, removing comments or adding comments that were not recorded as signed off on.
· After each clinical session, daily reports will be evaluated under the course associated with that session.
· At the completion of the semester, the final pass/fail grade will be calculated.
Hurdle requirements
In this task, you are required to complete and submit a Clinical Portfolio. Students must complete the portfolio for all clinical and observational sessions. This is a pass / fail (MUST PASS) assessment based on student performance and quality of critical self-reflections within the required items. To achieve a pass, the following conditions must be met starting from the week specified in the course: Daily clinical performance (CP): A 'pass' for the CP will involve a student receiving 1 “Developing” mark or less across all CP domains. A 'developing' for the CP will involve a student receiving 1 “Expectations Not Met” (ENM) or less across all CP domains. A 'fail' for the CP will involve a student receiving 2 or more “Expectations Not Met” (ENM) across all CP domains. Daily fitness to practice performance (FTPP): A pass for the FTPP will involve receiving at least 'developing' in all the FTPP domains. Any 'Expectations Not Met' (ENM) in the FTPP domains will be referred to the Program Convenor for review under the Fitness to Practice Policy. Overall performance: A pass for the clinical performance will involve 50% or more of the clinical sessions receiving an “Expectations Met” (EM) in the daily clinical performance. A pass for fitness to practice performance will involve 50% or more of the clinical sessions receiving an “Expectations Met” (EM) in the daily fitness to practice performance. Assessment of the clinical practice performance will be by the Course Coordinator, in discussion with the clinical supervisory team. This is based on student's performance and the quality of the critical self-reflections following each session/day, during the assessment period. In accordance with PPL Assessment Procedure Section 3 Part J, supplementary assessment will NOT be available for clinical practice performance (portfolio) as professional competencies are developed over a 13-week practicum. There is NO resubmission or resit option available for this assessment.Submission guidelines

Daily sign-off:
-Complete the details in the form for session information and ADA item codes for treatment.
-Follow the School of Dentistry Guidelines for de-identifying patient codes and other identifiable information.
Sign-off procedure:
-You are to complete all the fields in the logbook form
-Submit to the Clinical Educator in eportfolio (This must happen at least half an hour before the end of your clinical session)
-The Clinical Educator will complete the rubric and feedback for the session
Feedback:
-Ensure that feedback is recorded in the logbook. The student must record this feedback and have the supervisor sign off on the statements.
-If no feedback was provided, the student must seek advice from the supervisor following the session, record the feedback, and have it signed off.
Late submissions:
-Ensure each daily sheet is signed by their clinical supervisor at the end of each session (am/pm), including the practical check sheets. -
-Submission completed more than 2 hours after the clinical session will be recorded as a non-submission.
Weekly submissions:
-Write a weekly reflection and action plan on their clinical performance starting from the week specified in the course.
Mid and End of semester submission:
-Complete a treatment summary at the completion of your final clinical session at the end of the week prior to the mid-semester break and at the end of the semester.
Deferral or extension
You cannot defer or apply for an extension for this assessment.
Due to the practical nature of clinical performance, extension/deferral is not available.

Additional course grading information
Rounding- Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number i.e. 84.4% will round down to 84% and 84.5% will round up to 85%. This will apply to all grade cutoffs apart from a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50% and a pass cannot be achieved with 49.5%.
