Aims and outcomes

This course aims to support students in further developing their skills in assessing and diagnosing dental and oral conditions as well as comprehensive oral care planning in preventive oral health care, periodontal care, oral surgery, oral medicine, special needs and appropriate referrals. Students will also consolidate their skills in intra-coronal restorations, dental analgesia, periodontal care, oral surgery, oral medicine and special needs dentistry in general practice.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

LO1.

Conduct patient histories, comprehensive oral examinations and recognise and diagnose a broad range of conditions of the oral cavity and proximate structures.

LO2.

Develop clinical reasoning and judgement skills to facilitate comprehensive oral care planning, considering individual patient's expectations and needs.

LO3.

Apply scientific evidence to justify the design of comprehensive oral care plans (including referrals) to manage individuals diagnosed with conditions of the oral cavity and proximate structures.

LO4.

Design and implement preventive care programs to improve and maintain oral health and to minimise risk of future disease in individuals diagnosed with dental caries, non-carious tooth surface loss and/or periodontal disease.

LO5.

Apply principles of minimum intervention to cavity preparations for intra-coronal restorations and the management of carious and non-carious disease of dental hard tissue.

LO6.

Demonstrate clinical skills to debride teeth effectively for patients with varying degrees of periodontal disease (PSR ≥ 4).

LO7.

Design strategies relevant to clinical dental practice to develop personal and professional leadership qualities, including resilience to work with possible health system challenges in delivering culturally safe health care.

LO8.

Employ critical reflection to experiential learning in both the pre-clinical and clinical environment, recognising advances in personal knowledge, understanding and clinical ability.

LO9.

Demonstrate exemplary verbal communication with patients, carers, clinical staff and peers, and create accurate written communication.

LO10.

Recognising limitations in knowledge, understanding and clinical skills, justify further professional development opportunities and refer within the inter-professional health team.

Task description

For further information, including instructions for each part and specific due dates, please see the Blackboard Task Sheet for this assessment item.

In this task, students are required to complete and submit a Clinical Practice Portfolio over the course of the semester, in order to document clinical performance within the patient clinic. Students must complete the portfolio for ALL clinical, dental assisting, fail to attend, and observational sessions. It consists of multiple ‘parts’ that all contribute to an overall ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’ for the assessment at the end of the semester.

This is a hurdle requirement and must be passed to progress throughout the Doctor of Dental Medicine.

In accordance with PPL Assessment Procedure Section 3 Part J, supplementary assessment will NOT be available for clinical practice performance (portfolio) as professional competencies are developed over a 16 week practicum.
