This course builds on student experience in general dental practice and the specialist dental disciplines. Students will develop their skills and competence in history taking, assessment, recognition, diagnosis, care planning and aspects of management for conditions commonly managed within the dental specialties including prosthodontics, endodontics and orthodontics. Students will begin to acquire clinical skills and competence in multi-disciplinary care of adults with moderately complex needs.

Aims and outcomes

This course builds upon students’ experience in general dental practice and the specialist dental disciplines, and aims to broaden exposure to, and experience of, advanced dental practice within the specialist branches of clinical dentistry.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this course you should be able to:

Task description

In this task, you are required to complete a tooth preparation for a ceramo-metal restoration or an all-ceramic restoration and fabrication of a temporary crown in a specific period of time. The specific teeth and type of preparation design will be provided to students on the day of the assessment.

A re-sit opportunity is available for students who do not achieve a passing standard on their first attempt.

  •  The maximum overall mark awarded following a re-sit will be capped at [50%] of the total assessment mark.
  • A re-sit cannot be deferred.

Task description

In this task, you are required to compile a clinical case portfolio and reflection of all the endodontics cases that you have completed this semester.  Every case should have a diagnosis, even if the treatment was initiated or completed by another practitioner.

Task description

In this task, you will be required to provide a critique for a series of stimulus items (radiographs, images, videos, etc.) that show cases and examples of dental practice related to complex patient histories, diagnosis and treatment plans, material and medicament selection and infection control. Your critique of the work you see in the stimulus should be based on your knowledge and understanding of best practice in complex patient histories, diagnosis and treatment plans, material and medicament selection and infection control.  

First submissions to peer, revision of a peer’s work and then final submission to the course coordinator is through your ePortfolio.  

Part A: Submit a draft critique to a peer for feedback with a request for specific feedback. 

Part B: Review peer feedback and update draft. Upload final version and complete a short reflection on what you learned about your work after reviewing the work of your peer and consequently, what you improved and why. Your final submission includes your final version and your peer’s draft which contains your feedback.

Task description

For further information, including instructions for each part and specific due dates, please see the Blackboard Task Sheet for this assessment item.

In this task, students are required to complete and submit a Clinical Practice Portfolio over the course of the semester, in order to document clinical performance within the patient clinic. Students must complete the portfolio for ALL clinical, dental assisting, fail to attend, and observational sessions. It consists of multiple ‘parts’ that all contribute to an overall ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’ for the assessment at the end of the semester.

This is a hurdle requirement and must be passed to progress throughout the Doctor of Dental Medicine for all clinical-based courses in the program.


Minimum performance requirement: A pass mark is ≥65%. This item can only receive overall a PASS or FAIL.


In accordance with PPL Assessment Procedure Section 3 Part J, supplementary assessment will NOT be available for clinical practice performance (portfolio) as professional competencies are developed over a 16 week practicum.

Additional course grading information

Percentage marks will be rounded to the nearest whole number - e.g., 84.4% rounds down to 84%, and 84.5% rounds up to 85%. This applies to all grade cutoffs except for a grade of 4. The minimum pass mark is 50%, and a pass cannot be achieved by rounding up from 49.5%.

Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessment is not available for some items in this course.
