This course is the first of six major discipline-specific courses that constitute the bulk of the coursework component of the specialty training program in the DClinDent. The suite of courses contains all of the materials required for the clinical component of the program. The course content will vary depending upon the discipline the candidate is studying. The contact hours may also vary between disciplines but students should refer to the published hours as a guide.
DENT8010 provides an introduction to the skills and knowledge required in the development of specialist practice.ᅠ
This course is a time for revision of undergraduate courses, and addition of the necessary components of the specialty discipline to allow the student to commence practice at an advanced and supported level and to begin acquiring the cases, clinical and otherwise, required throughout the program. The Clinical Log should be commenced as early as possible and it forms part of this course. It is a requirement that the log is reviewed regularly with the Course Coordinator and it is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that this occurs.ᅠ
The specific course content will vary depending upon the candidate'sᅠdiscipline. Specific discipline learning objectives, course materials and assessment will be provided to students by their respective Discipline Lead, as follows:ᅠ
DMFR: Dr Raahib Dudhiaᅠ
Endodontics: Prof Ove Peters
Oral Medicine: Dr Maryam Jessri
Orthodontics: Dr Hisham Mohammedᅠ
Periodontics: A/Prof Ryan Leeᅠ
Prosthodontics: A/Prof David Thomsonᅠ
Special Needs Dentistry: Dr Claudia Lopez Silvaᅠ
Course requirements
Assumed background
The courseᅠrequires the candidate to possess the level of knowledge and skill in clinical sciences required to support General Dental Practice. Where necessary, students will be provided with the opportunity to review undergraduate course material. It is, however, the responsibility of the student to ensure that information provided in this course is understood and that may mean considerable revision of undergraduate information and investigation in areas not covered in undergraduate programs. Where deficiencies in knowledge and skill are identified the student must ensure that these are discussed with the course coordinator and a program designed to commence at the earliest opportunity in first semester.
