This course is the fourth of the discipline-specific clinical courses for DClinDent students and continues on from DENT8030. The objectives are to progressively build competence and confidence at second year level in specialty clinical practice and knowledge.
DENT8040 is the course where DClinDent students continue to familiarise themselves with the specialist environment and expand their knowledge and clinical skills in their respective disciplines.

Assumed background
DENT8040 cannot be commenced until the candidate has successfully completed DENT8030 and any other requirements that may be specific to the specialty discipline. Previous courses cannot be carried through from first to second semesterᅠwith an incomplete result.

Aims and outcomes
The aim of this course is to bring the candidate to an advanced level of skill and knowledge leading to specialist clinical practice. It will encompass a significant volume of theoretical and clinical/laboratory work and requires the achievement of defined goals in the preparation of the Clinical Log.

Task description
The practical assessment is based on two components:
1- Logbook assessment (all disciplines) - Logbooks will be assessed by the discipline leads for each specialty (specific criteria is available in the attached Practical Assessment course file)
2- Supervisor’s feedback (all disciplines) - Students will be provided feedback by their discipline lead during the course as a formative assessment. The summative assessment will be at the end of the semester. The supervisor report feedback form attached is a sample and might differ from discipline to discipline.
No Supplementary assessment is allowed for the logbook assessment and the supervisor feedback as this is based on the full semester’s clinical activities.

Late submission
A penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark will be deducted per 24 hours from time submission is due for up to 7 days. After 7 days, you will receive a mark of 0.

Task description
Students are expected to participate/present in the following:
1 - Seminars/assignments (discipline specific)
2 - Journal clubs (discipline specific)
3 - Multidisciplinary treatment planning discussions (includes all postgraduate students)
For the discipline of Orthodontics, a written assignment task will take place by week 15 and a topic will be assigned for each student and will be marked in a similar fashion to the written exam.
This is a Must Pass assessment item. Supplementary assessment is NOT available for this item as assessment is based on activities performed over the entire semester.
Failure to adhere to two or more of the above or repeatedly did not meet one of the above three items will lead to a failure in this assessment.
Further task descriptions for the seminars and journal club requirements will be placed on Blackboard course site (discipline specific).
Additional information regarding the Multidisciplinary treatment planning discussions
Students will need to:
1 - Submit documented complex case that require multidisciplinary evaluation. The template will be made available on Blackboard course site and this will only apply to those who are scheduled to present during the semester.
2 - Actively participate by contributing to treatment planning discussions (applies to all).
3 - Students are expected to present at least one treatment planning case formatted according to the template provided on Blackboard course site. This will only apply to those who are scheduled to present during the semester.

Task description
This item will assess the student's theoretical knowledge as it applies to their specific clinical discipline.
This is a discipline specific assessment item and could be in the form of:
1- Written paper examination
and/or
2- Viva Voce examination
and/or
3- Practical/case presentation examination/OSCE
Hurdle requirements
This is a Must Pass assessment item and will be conducted during the end of semester exam period. Supplementary assessment is available for written exams, case presentations, OSCE, practical and oral exams. Failing one and only one component of the end of semester exam is considered a marginal fail. A failing grade awarded to more than one component is NOT a marginal fail and will not be awarded a supplementary assessment.Submission guidelines

Supplementary assessment
Supplementary assessment is not available for some items in this course.
Additional assessment information
Different disciplines will by their nature have different assessment requirements and formats. For example: Oral Medicine requires a significant knowledge of pharmacology whereas Orthodontics and Prosthodontics requires a similar depth of knowledge but in materials sciences; DMF Radiology requires a demonstrated ability to provide radiological interpretation whereas Paedodontics requires a demonstrated ability to provide specific clinical services demonstrating the same level of expertise.
All assessment tasks must be passed successfully to obtain a pass in DENT8040. Refer to Section 6 Policies and Guidelines for examinations and other related matters.

As per UQ supplementary assessment policy for Pass/Fail courses, students who have a Fail course grade (N) are reviewed and recommendations are made to the Associate Dean Academic (ADA) regarding eligibility to sit supplementary assessment. Patterns of poor performance, such as a Fail in two or more components of discipline-specific assessment tasks will not be recommended to have supplementary assessment approved.
