This course is the fifth of the discipline-specific clinical courses for DClinDent students. The objectives are to progressively build competence & confidence at final year level in specialty clinical practice & knowledge, which will enable independent practice as a discipline specialist. The contact hours may vary between disciplines but students should refer to the published hours as a guide.

DENT8050 is the final stage in the development of the skills and knowledge that postgraduate students need in order to operate across the scope of practice required by the speciality.ᅠThe content of this course reflects the requirements of the individual clinical disciplines and is directed to providing both didactic teaching and an increased opportunity for self-directed learning. It is expected that students will become progressively more independent both in clinical activities and their approach to the specialty.

This period is one to focus on increasing the scope of practice and knowledge within the discipline.ᅠ

The Clinical Log should now be in the final phases of preparation. Cases for examination should be well documented and waiting on completion details only. The log should contain a detailed report of the teaching and clinical experience obtained during the program. It is a valuable document detailing the content of specialty training and should now begin to reflect this.

The specific course content will vary depending upon the candidate’s clinical discipline. Specific discipline learning objectives, course materials, learning activities and assessments will be provided to students by their respective Discipline Lead, as follows:

DMFR: Dr Raahib Dudhia

Endodontics: Prof Ove Peters

Oral Medicine: Dr Maryam Jessri

Orthodontics: Dr Hisham Mohammed

Periodontics: A/Prof Ryan Lee

Prosthodontics: A/Prof David Thomsonᅠ

Special Needs Dentistry: Dr Claudia Lopez Silva

Course requirements

Assumed background

This course assumes a detailed knowledge of the specialty obtained during the first two years. This constitutes the depth of the specialty. The focus now is on broadening the knowledge, competencies and confidence of the students. If students feel there are areas of significance that remain to be addressed then these should be discussed directly with the discipline lead. It is not anticipated that remedial work is a significant part of the final year but any concerns should be raised at the commencement of the third year at the latest to ensure a successful outcome to the individual student's program. Any discussion at this level is strictly confidential and students should feel comfortable in any discussion with the discipline lead and/or course coordinator.

Late Submission

Before applying for an extension please read the information on Applying for an assessment extension .

The School of Dentistry does not guarantee a trouble-free semester of study. The best preparation for unexpected illnesses and other disruptive events is to start your assignments early in the semester. Extensions are not a remedy for students experiencing more significant interruptions to study.

Late assignments will be penalised 10% percent of the course grade for every day or part thereof past the submission deadline, including weekends. For example, if you submit your assignment on time and it earns a grade of 70% out of the possible 100%, that is the percentage you will receive for that component of the assessment. If you submit the same report 1 day late, you will only receive 60% out of a possible 100%. If you are two days late, you will receive 50%, and so on.

If you are unsure about any of the pathways for late submission, please be in touch with your Course Coordinator in the first instance.

Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessment is not available for some items in this course.

Should you fail a course with a grade of 3, or a non-graded ‘N’, you may be eligible for supplementary assessment. Refer to my.UQ for information on supplementary assessment.

This course is Partially Exempt for Supplementary Assessment.

Not all of the assessment components of this course may be re-assessed with supplementary assessment. A grade of 3 or N does not guarantee that supplementary assessment may be undertaken for this course, however students may apply.

Refer to my.UQ for how to apply for supplementary assessment.

Supplementary assessment can take any form, for example, an oral or a written exam. Students who are eligible and approved for a supplementary assessment and the form of assessment is an examination, are expected to be available to sit the supplementary exam during the University’s Deferred and Supplementary examination period. Once approved, supplementary assessment cannot be rescinded by the student.
